    A little snippet
Nottingham Evening Post 4th March 1929
The death has taken place at Oaklands, Bromley, Kent, of Mr William Abraham Hodges, for many years manager of the Nottingham Branch of the Union of London and Smith's Bank. Mr Hodges, who was 88 years of age, was the eldest son of the late Canon Hodges, of Carlisle, and for a time was manager of the Mansfield Branch of the bank of Samuel Smith and Company. Upon the amalgamation of the firm with the Union of London and Smiths' Bank, he was given charge in Nottingham, and retained the position for many years, until retiring in 1908.

No problem - don't worry about it.

Have found a baptism for Reginald John Hodges - son of William Abraham and Augusta - in West Derby St. James, Lancashire 21 April 1889.

    We are moving forward.

What is funny is that William Abraham and Augusta don't seem to appear on censuses until 1911. I don't know if you've got an accurate list of all the 7 children mentioned as having been born on the 1911 (RG14 PN 20773 SN 5).
I checked for further baptisms in Mansfield up to at least the end of 1877 and couldn't find any. It's always possible that William Abraham was a non-conformist and may have baptised only one of his children…but that's surmise.

However I see on the 1911 census that Reginald was born in Mansfield Woodhouse which I see has its own separate church - I'll have a look at those registers as soon as I can and tell you if I find anything.

I see Leonard Hodges' middle name is Cliff (born Mansfield RD Dec Quarter 1880)

On reflection, as the family was clearly deeply Church of England, what I wrote above was nonsense. I'll now stop surmising and plan for doing something useful like checking those baptisms in St Edmund's, Mansfield Woodhouse!!

    I have the 7 children:
With Sarah Amelia - William Herbert [1873] & Cecil Stuart [1875]
    and
With Augusta - Jessie Leila [1880], Leonard Cliff [1881], Leslie Noel [1882], Harold Augustus [1886], and Reginald John [1889]

I have a very interesting piece on Harold Augustus which I'll gladly share if there is interest. If anyone wants this please send me your email address privately

Thank you, Ann, for this as well as post #21.
I did find the record in the Probate Calendar, however what you found has saved me from purchasing his Will.

Normally, I don't spend a lot of time on 3rd and 4th cousins, however, with what I found on Harold Augustus and the Canonization [hope that is correct terminology] of Abraham - his Grandfather - this family is becoming the exception to my rule.

Well still no luck in tracing the baptism of William Herbert but for what they're worth I have found the baptisms for the 6 remaining children:

Church of St Peter & St Paul, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire

5th September 1879: JESSIE LEILA son of William Abraham and Augusta Hodges. Address: Mansfield. Profession: Gentleman.

7th November 1880: LEONARD CLIFF son of William Abraham and Augusta Hodges. Address: Market Street [Mansfield]. Profession: Bank Manager.

25th January 1882: LESLIE NOEL son of William Abraham and Augusta Hodges. Address: Market Street [Mansfield]. Profession: Gentleman.

Church of St Edmund King & Martyr, Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire

N.B. Mansfield Woodhouse is a village just on the edge of Mansfield.

8th April 1883: EDWARD CHARLES son of William Abraham and Augusta Hodges. Address: The Priory, Mansfield Woodhouse. Profession: Gentleman.

8th October 1884: WILLIAM CLIFF son of William Abraham and Augusta Hodges. Address: Mansfield Woodhouse. Profession: Gentleman.

20th March 1886: HAROLD AUGUSTUS son of William Abraham and Augusta Hodges. Address: Mansfield Woodhouse. Profession: Gentleman.

You have done wonders for me and much appreciated. One little point - Jessie Leila was their only daughter.

Don't worry about William Herbert's baptism - it would be nice to have however it isn't of great concern.

I've been quite active in my research of this family - are you interested in their details? I won't be upset if you're not.

Having found the baptiism of Reginald John Hodges - I have followed his life and found that he was knighted in 1951.

Part of his working life was General Manager of rhe Mersey Docks and Harbour Board - Liverpool [I think] - between 1941 and 1954.

Given that how the Docks were ravaged between 1939 & 1945, I suspect that his Knighthood was as a result of his involvement during the war - but I cannot find anyrhing to support or refute this.

Can I ask for assistance here on this thread?

I have other details of his career prior to 1941 as he was a Shipping Manager for Cunard and later with Anchor Line [Henderson Brothers] that the latter I believe was located in Scotland.

I don't know if you have seen this but the relevant issue of the London Gazette does not give a reason as such

Reginald is included under the second general heading of GENERAL CHANCERY OF THE ORDERS OF KNIGHTHOOD, the first group of people under this heading are conferred a Peerage, the second group are conferred the Honour of Knighthood [see thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/39243/supplement/3062 ] then follow a few names whose services are specified e.g. Commonwealth services

The pattern repeats it seems through the different levels of awards -- the reason most people are awarded the honour is not specified, or is implied via their rank/occupation

I believe that he would have been nominated for the award, I don't know if it is possible to obtain copies of such nominations, or whether they are kept at Buckingham Palace or the National Archives

[edit: I tried to make my link non-sticky but it doesn't seem to have worked] Link broken - Doug.
