In the London Gazette I have found two references to Elijah Gough

I am free to publish with a couple of provisos.

Does anyone know where I can find more information on this. Also if anyone can explain what this all means it would be a start:rolleyes:

There is a full explanation of the 1914 Bankruptcy Act in this pdf. Scroll down to the bit on Receiving Orders and it will show you the process.

Hopefully, it will explain things.

Oh yes - Elijah also appears in a couple of other issues. Expand the search dates from 01/10/1921 to 01/06/1922 and you should find them. :)

Thank you very much Jan.

From one of the others you suggested I looked at I found a reference to a Scobie M J G. This will be Mackay John Graham Scobie of Hereford.

As it says "Whether Debtor's or Creditor's Petition—Debtor's." does this mean he declared himself bankrupt?

Now I'm wondering what business he was bankrupt from. The Red Lion or His Monumental Mason business or maybe both.

Thank you again.

That's the way that I read it - but others may know different. :)

I would have thought that it meant both as it was he who is declaring bankruptcy rather than the businesses.

The local Archives might be able to help with the licence for the Red Lion - to see when it ended. Just a thought...

Good idea. I'm going there on Tuesday I will ask.

Even though I am asking about Elijah I couldn't help doing a little on M J G Scobie (well...I'm nosey :) )

Mackay John Graham Scobie was the First Comanding Officer of the Hereford Regiment during the Boer War. He retired in 1911 and became a Solicitor. Before the Boer War he was a former Mayor of Hereford

You would think as he was a Monumental Mason in Knighton there would be an add for his business in the papers somewhere but I've searched annd can't find anything.

Oh well will have to leave this for now, off to watch 'Judgement Day' ruby at Cardiff Millennium Stadium today :)

Check the directories when you are at the Archives on Tuesday. There is more likely to be something there. :)
