How do I store it ?

Hi Chimp,

When you send a friend request on FB, it gives you the option to send a message with it and they would then get the notification of a message.

Wonderful story and Good Luck with storing it.. :)

Hmmmm it didn't with mine. I clicked 'send friend request' and it just changed to 'friends request sent'. No option to include a message.

Ohhh... Maybe they've changed it in the last few weeks  Have you tried sending a message to see if they do get it?

You have every right to be a proud Mum Spison, but what they are working with in the image is gross. :)
They are trying to preserve the body to prevent further deterioration. The bloke was the top UK expert in the field of "preventing bodies deteriorating further" and he was imparting knowledge. And yes I was shocked when I saw what she was doing! Last I heard she was fixing a coach. She says objects conservation is interesting! Ain't it the truth! (I think I'd stick to bibles.)

Hi Chimp,
From the objects conservator who said "I'm not too knowledgeable on paper."
An archive box should fit snugly but not tightly (a couple of mm either side) and if you plan to handle the book it should be able to be removed from the box easily so an opening down the back rather than at the top might be best. If the cover is not in good condition then the book should be stored flat rather than standing but if it's in good condition then it can be stood up in the box. If the pages are crumbling then some buffered tissue to help reduce the acidity might help. (You will need to ask about this as I have no idea what this is.) She did say that if a conservator saw it then they would know best depending on its age and the materials used in its construction.

Thank you very much Jane. There are acid free boxes on ebay that are used for storing wedding dresses they even come with acid free tissue paper. not to expensive :D

Oh you lucky Chimp - bet every one of us on here are green with envy. I cannot add more to the above ideas on how to store it, but do remember to support the front cover and pages when you open it so as not to put more stress on the spine
I know when I have been to Essex RO they give you a type of pillow to open the book on. They also have a document conserving and repair dept. I know they use it for their own work, maybe a project they could help you on. If you would like their phone No I will look it up for you. arryboy

Thank you arryboy but at the moment my funds wont stretch to having it done.

Thank you again.

For anyone that would like to know about the school children and what the Bible looks like (there are several pictures), there is an article in the Bedfordshire on Sunday.

Thanks to you, Chimp, and this comment that you made, I went on to ebay and have ordered a special box to store the christening gown made for my first by my mum, my sister and me, with tiny pin tucks across the front, puffed sleeves gathered to frilled cuffs and hand-made bobbin lace set in and on the sleeve and collar edges. It was in acid-free tissue paper before, but just rolled up (to stop creasing) not protected from blows, falls or other acts of God ... or humans.

It's amazing where genealogy can take you ... but in a way it's related as I'm hoping that the robe will serve the next generation. If my lot get on with it ;)

Nice article, Terry. Makes me think that some things are just meant to be. What a lucky chimp you are!!

I reckon you should write to the paper and tell them how chuffed you are......but don't send them a picture, 'cause the good people of Bedfordshire may be a little confused as to why a Chimp was laying claim to a family Bible.........;)

Our Chimp is a perfect example of true integration, Ann. An accompanying photo might go a long way towards establishing "peace in our time" and also encourage more to adapt to their new surroundings!!

Here chimpy, chimpy, chimpy................... {-(^^)-}

Lucky old you Chimp, it's a magnificent looking Bible, I do envy you.

My family line bible is in the possession of a second cousin which has me green with envy. I can't complain (I do a bit though) she inherited it from her father who inherited it from his father who was an eldest child. It's a shame really that the bible will no longer pass down to people bearing my surname, my second cousin has no interest in genealogy but I'm hoping that her descendents might and keep the family bible safe. Btw the family bible is nowhere near as grand as yours Chimp, just your every day type Bible.

Anyone know of a (cheap) discreet burglar in Essex? :D :D

One has to wonder what on earth happened to my great Aunt to make her tear the front pages out of the family Bible, which she kept, but then burned the Bible! Although badly deteriorated, the pages have survived and helped towards knocking down a family brick wall. Could it have been something to do with the fact that her father married her mother bigamously I wonder?

I wonder how my g-grandfather John worked out what to write in the bible held by my "cousin". I've seen his handwriting in other documents, so I know he actually recorded things, but why? If he and my g-grandmother Sarah married on the date he mentioned it was definitely bigamy because it was well before the divorce from her first husband was made absolute. I know it was definitely a love match as they stayed together for 10 children (2 definitely recorded as illegitimate (incl my grandmother)) and until Sarah died many years later. I wonder if the date he chose was the one where they officially moved in to live together. I guess we'll never know. Both the bible and the "incriminating" pages are still in existence, and I think that's wonderful, but the reasons behind the choice of date will forever be a mystery.

Love 'em anyway and I'm so glad he left yet another example of his handwriting for me to find!!!

I was just about to toss my research into the bin because of the 75ft thick brick walls I've encountered in so many areas, but thinking about this has stayed my hand at least for the moment.

My parents never married (.....a story for another day), but when I was young and before I knew about their situation, whenever I asked my mother what was the date of their wedding anniversary, she always told me 30th September, so I feel that that must have been the day she and Dad met. Like your gr grandfather Philippa, my Mum and Dad loved each other for the rest of their lives and it was definitely a love match. It never mattered one iota to either myself or my brother.

I now have the Bible. It weighs a ton (5.5 kilo actually). I am so very proud to have it. Many many thanks must go out to the music teacher of Newnham Middle School in Bedford for finding me ;)
