No idea!

Sis

Rootles out resources!
Can anyone please tell me what the letters S M W N underneath the surname Jaques might mean? It's from St Mary Woolnoth 1732 records. Some of the other surnames have letters too, but some are different e.g. S M W C and some surnames don't have anything. Thanks.

Could it have something to do with St Mary's Woolnoth being combined with St Mary's Woolchurch after the great fire of London.
Mr Wiki helped a bit there...I think  I think. I think. Of course all this is speculation from someone who knows nought about London.

By golly I think you've got it AM!! Cos we have S M W N & S M W C, makes sense to me, thank you!!

I didn't see the obvious! Ancestry kept me up very late last night

If you read the history of St Mary's Woolchurch Haw you may come up with what I came up with. It was destroyed in the great fire of London and both parishes were united as there were not enough funds to rebuild St Mary's Woolchurch Haw. I think I read that correctly.

Um, can you believe that in the deep, dark recesses of what passes for my brain I already knew that! I will have another read of it to refresh my memory, thank you.
