What's her name?

Yes I agree arthurk - I was once caught out with that! sent me on a goose chase too. I found another death for a Mary Welton age 76 at Hoxne Suffolk. Approx birth age 1798 in Sep qr 1874 4a 317 53. Not wanting to put the cat among the pigeons - but - I am not 100% sure. There do seem to be a few Mary Welton's to choose from :)

so John should be somewhere in 1841
Yes, but the name John . All I have to go on is that he was a stonemason, born around 1795 ish (The 1838 death was in his 80's). With no family around, I can't pin him down.
There are 2 burials of other John Welton's in Hoxne
Jul-Sep. q. 1844
Apr-Jun. q. 1845

Could one of these be right?
Yes, quite likely, but then I thought the 1838 one was right

It's the dodgy o or n that bothers me

Given that the handwriting is unclear anyway I think the O in Welton is so similar in its imprecision to the O in Wife OF…" that we have to take it that in Welton it is just rushed and almost not there.

So, the kids were in the workhouse - how old were they?

The 1838 death of John - given his age - could possibly be the father of the John whose wife Mary died in 1837.

I agree it's costly but one of those - 1844 or 1845 - may be him!

Mary Ann 14 (bap 1827), Frances 9 (bap 1833), Charles 11 (b 1829), John 6 (bap 1835). I know what happened to the girls when they left, I think I have the right Charles, but nothing on John the son who is still there in 1851
