A Missing Piece In The Jigsaw

Bonzo Dog

Still the Mad Scientist?
Apologies in advance for the long post, but there is a puzzle to be solved, and I don't know where to start looking for any answers- England, Canada or the USA.

John Stephen Edward Alston (1891-1983) had 2 daughters - Jessie Winifred and Rose Valerie, neither of whom married. Jessie was born in 1913 and died in Droitwich Worcestershire in 2010. Her obituary notice was posted by her sister Rose, who herself died just under 2 years later, in 2012, at the age of 62 - an inferred YOB of 1950.

There is a 1950 birth registration for a Rose V Alston, and her birth certificate states she was born 29 June 1950 at the former Elizabeth Garrett Maternity Home, Hampstead, London (40 Belsize Grove), and names her parents as John Stephen Edward Alston and Alice Joyce Alston, formerly Morrison. The birth was registered by John, who gave his address as 14 Handel Street WC1.

John and Jessie lived for about 30 years in Canada (Vancouver via Cortes Island), where John's first wife Jessie Gertrude died in 1927. Immigration records show that John visited England in 1948, when he was accompanied by his daughter Jessie, and in 1950, when he was listed on his own. He arrived at Liverpool about 3 weeks before Rose was born. Both passenger lists give an intended address in Solihull Warwickshire, possibly a cousin.

He made at least 2 further transatlantic trips, in 1952 and 1958. On the first he was accompanied by his daughter Jessie, and by his daughter Rose on the second. The passenger list gives Rose's DOB as 29 June 1950 and an intended address in Kings Norton Birmingham (his brother's home address). John died in Bromsgrove Worcestershire in 1983.

The puzzle is; where on earth does Alice Joyce Morrison come from, and where and when did she marry John Stephen, if indeed they bothered?

London Electoral Registers for the 1950's show an Alice J Alston, but she was living with someone named David. There are also entries for at least 2 John S Alston's, but none living with an Alice or a Joyce. Nothing in the Midlands registers.

There seems to be a huge age gap between Jessie Winifred and Rose Valerie?
I can't find an Alice Joyce Morrison on any BC records...sorry.

Is it possible that Rose V. Alston was born in Canada but her birth for some reason registered in UK? or did John come back to UK expressly to register her birth? & where did Alice Joyce go? Also when did Rose V. go to Canada?

several variations of Alice / J. Morrison & Alston about but none look likely
FreeBMD don't know her.
A child Alice Joyce Morrison was born & died 1930 in N.S. but Mothers name Ethel.

I'm wondering if you should be looking for Alice Joyce in Scotland as Morrison is a Scottish surname. For example entering Morrison in the 1901 census shows these statistics on Ancestry,
1901 Scotland Census 21011
1901 England Census 7615
1901 Wales Census 166

Just now discovered Handel Street W1 isn't straightforward. There's 14 Handel Mansions, Handel Street WC1 [Clarks in 1949 and 1951], also 14 Handel St WC1; Frank and Gladys Stead were there in 1951, and Arthur George and Mary Winifred Evans in 1949.

Wendy, thank you so much for your efforts. The above three entries are not only new to me, but the first 2 are also a complete surprise as I lived about half a mile from Keswick Road until 1962.

I just wonder if Alice Alston/Morrison came to England from Canada by air. This could explain why Rose was born in London and perhaps the parents took temporary lodgings in Handel Street. Why Alice never appears in any records together with John elsewhere is a total puzzle.

John and many of his family, particularly his mother's siblings, were involved in horticulture of some sort or other. His initial residence on Cortes Island was with a maternal uncle and 2 aunts, all unmarried, who are listed in the 1910 and 1920 censuses as farmers, while John was a consultant farming engineer.

The search continues.

Perhaps it was one of those romantic meetings when all is lost to the moment? but when notified He came back to register his part in the childs life?

(just been reading Lilian Harry again, brings it all to moist eyes).

This thought is beginning to take pole position in my mind. The film Brief Encounter springs to mind. There is death registration for an Alice J Alston in Stepney in the 1st quarter of 1951, but she was registered as being 69.

It looks very much as if John didn't just acknowledge Rose as his daughter but took full responsibility for her afterwards. If so, then all credit to him. The wording of Jessie's obituary notice makes it clear that Rose was absolutely devoted to her, so perhaps Jessie played the role of sister/mother. Unless something definite comes to light, this is the interpretation I'll go with, rightly or wrongly.

My geography is weak. Would this be a candidate?

Deaths Sep 1950
Morrison Alice 40 H.Hempstead 4b 52

I also saw that yesterday Barb, it's only about 26 miles. The thing is we know nothing of Alice & where she had lived before Baby nor where she went after it's birth. A death is the easiest to understand for her not being with her child.

Before I ran out of post time without copying my edit.. I wrote that I'd started to check passenger list for anyone travelling same trip as John -16 Au. 1950- with infant female, there were two onboard. Not sure what defines infant. 3 females aged 1 + one aged 8/12 but no 'infant'. Would check travel of 'Winifred' in 1950 but rough night here mostly up & about assisting, means my eyes are not up to much today.

I saw this too Barbara, and what follows explains why I am about to splash out £9.25 to find out more. Wendy has put me to shame. All I could say about HH is that it's nearer to London than than I am

A tempting entry for Alice J Morrison has been found in a 1921 Canadian census return for Alberta District 9. Her parents were born in the USA but her mother is of English descent, while her father is Scottish. She is however about 5 years too young to be the Alice who died in Hemel Hempstead, unless of course the stated age on the death registration is simply a blind guess.
