Help date a photo please

Anyone got any ideas of when this could have been taken? My mum's cousin in Australia has e-mailed it to me asking if I know who the people are.

You took my words re the Gentleman Hugh. Jelly Legs do you have any photos of his wife to compare or know of anyone who may have? She does look a smidgeon older than he. Perhaps just the faded photo & angle of her head.
 
I agree with the others that it looks like your grandfather, and I also agree that it may be a bit earlier than I originally said, since he looks rather young :)
 
Shame he put a hat on, otherwise that could have been the clincher - but I agree that it is the same chap in both photos :)

Thanks all. As soon as I saw the photo of the couple, I thought it looked like my G. Grandad. He got married in 1886.

Wendy, I have a couple of photos that may be my G. Grandma, but they are of an older lady. Don't know of anyone who has any others and all of the "oldies" who may have known are now gone :( The lady does look familiar, though. Will dig them out and post later.
 
Ok, this, according to my mum's cousin, is G. Grandma - the only other photo that I know of that she should be in is a group photo of her daughter's wedding in 1914. Unfortunately, except for the bride and groom, we really don't know who is who in it - will post it in a mo.

Going back to the photo in Post #1, from the pose, I'd say mother and son.

My reasoning. If it was husband and wife, then I'd expect to see the wife in the foreground as if 'pushing' her towards the onlooker.

With the female at the rear it could well be the mother 'exhibiting' her son.

Lovely photo that jelly legs, I remember it from a post I think re dating clothing. She does have features similar to the later one which are somewhat hard to define -nose -chin. Women often age faster & it's really only the lighter hair(grey) which gives the older look -I think, but not always clearly;)

Again Ken has a point there are facial similarities- Woman to man, but I have seen many photos where wife is at back behind her Husband. Depends on the time, photographers sense of study & habits I guess.
It may have been a special day for the young man which made him more 'special'in this photo.

Do we have any more information regarding the male subject (and his mother)?

Looking at, what appears to be a fashion to grow facial hair. And here I'm thinking about the two comparison photographs in Post #4. Then he could have been as young as 16. What did he become? Trade/Occupation? Had he just been awarded something, qualified as, accepted into, etc, whereby the mother/wife had the photo taken to 'show-case' him to other family members.

Was he a 'first born' or were there older siblings? In other words, do we know when the mother was born? If it is his mother in the photo then, without implying anything otherwise, she seems to have kept her figure fairly well.
 
I would say the wedding 'photo was slightly later - maybe 1910? That's mainly going by the style of the hats :rolleyes:
