Adoption in 1880s

Florence Eliza Dunn was registered Sept qtr 1874 Clifton 6a 125

The original 1881 census gives her pob Glos - Bath
 
Florence appears to be in Industrial Home, Bondgate, Ripon in 1991
Florence E Dunn b 1873 Bath Somerset - entered as a scholar
RG12/3511/97/17

So no clues as to her parentage!

There is a Florence Eliza Dunn baptised at Bedminister St Silas on 12 July 1874 according to FamilySearch. Parents James & Rebecca Dunn. But, also according to FamilySearch, she is with her parents in Bristol on the 1881 census so it looks like she is a different person from the one in Monmouthshire . . . unless she is the same person listed twice.

P.S. MollyMay, just saw your latest post about the industrial home. Seems to be consistent with birthplace of Bath. If there's no link to Gloucester after all, then I am probably barking up the wrong tree! Sorry for leading you astray...
 
Florence d/o James and Rebecca is still with her family in 1891, so this must be a different Florence to the g.dau in 1881.
 
There are only 23 pages to the 1881 census for Portskewett.
Running through it quickly I could see no mention of other names in this thread. There are no other Dunn families except the one found.

There were 2 young lads living as lodgers in different houses. A John and a William Gould, both were navies working on the Severn Tunnel.

I have travelled back through the census with William and Ann, they do not appear to have a daughter Emma (more's the pity).

Ann b Peterborough 1816
Susan b 1856 Pulsey Yorks (Pudsey perhaps)

So they moved about - it could be William was also a tunneller.
William was not definite about where he was born.
I do not see them on the 1841 census.
Nothing to tie them in with Emma the mother of Harold Leonard.

I am sorry I started you on that wild goose chase, MollyMay. William & Ann seem to have gallivanted around all over the place, but they can't hide from you!

Believe me Huncamunca many Dunns do hide from me (you would not believe how many times such a simple name gets mangled), I have Emmas in my line, hence my tenacity with this one.
I have kept all my notes, because you never know one day I may need to add this William Henry (oh how they loved that combination of names) to those that I already have!
 
There is an Emma Dunn on the 1881 census in Bristol RG11/2472/98/9

She is listed as niece (age 13 b1868 London) to Charles and Harriet Bazeley.
She may be a bit young to be the mother of Harold, but as my Dunns are from London I will see what I can find on her - after I have cooked dinner.
 
I think I have been on another wild goose chase, though quite enjoyable. ;)

I found a Joseph/Michael Dunn b. 1827 Manchester. S/o Arson and Mary.
In 1857 in Cheltenham, Gloucs he married a Sarah Gould.
She was born about 1822 in Somerset.
I was really hoping to find they had a daughter named Emma but not yet. :(

In 1861 Michael J and Sarah live in Charlton Kings, Cheltenham with Charles b. 1851 and Joseph b. 1861.
Staying with them was a niece, Jane Gould (she is the daughter of Joseph and Eliza and was born about 1846 in Somerset).
RG9/1794/44/11

In 1871 Joseph is a widow in Hyde Cheshire with sons Charles b. 1851, Henry b. 1860 and Thomas b. 1863.
RG10/3653/47/30

In 1881 Joseph is now with Elizabeth Ann, his son Joseph and what is probably her children with the surname Lomas.
RG11/3468/20/33

I know from the online parish records in Gloucs, Michael and Sarah also had a daughter Rose Ann baptised 1858 but she is not on the census so may have died.

I am trying to go back with Sarah Dunn (Gould) and see if I can connect them in anyway.

Well we can discount this Emma, in 1871 and 1891 her surname is given as Dean, so it looks like the 1881 entry is wrong - another one bites the dust.
 
I might have found something, then again, I might not ;)
It will take me a bit to type it out. Meanwhile it is an 1841 census.

Martock is not far from Taunton where Joseph and Eliza (Jane's parents lived).
We know Jane travelled from there to Cheltenham to visit her aunt and uncle in 1861.
 
I still don't know where Emma fits into this so maybe I am barking up the wrong tree. ;)
 
Not immediately relevant, but I note that Corlett, the maiden name of Elijah's wife Eliza, is a Manx name, from the Isle of Man.
 
Hello to all the lovely people who have been searching on my behalf for my Ralph family. You have all been very busy! The Ralph`s have been a mystery to me for a while now, with the name changes etc. I knew Eliza was married to Francis Causon and had daughter Annie. I could never find a marriage record between Eliza and Elijah. On Harold`s marriage certificate his father is listed as Elijah Ralph. If Elijah`s name was Gould, where did the name Ralph come from? The mystery deepens!
I will look in to information regarding Emma Dunn who had a son Harold Leonard Dunn. She is new to me.
