how to start threads about the same surname

I have a question about starting threads about the same surname. Somewhere on Top Dog’s help pages I read a caution about keeping inquiries regarding the same surname within the same thread. It sounded as if each inquiry, even if about a different person or generation within that surname, should be compounded on the same thread regardless of when the thread was first started. This would prevent redundancy or the wasting of other members’ time who had helped solve the inquiry.

I want to post a query about my Jackson family. Could you clarify whether I start a general ‘Jackson’ thread, or do I start a new thread for each Jackson of a different line and generation?---Yeates

yes Yeates you are right it says that under Forum Decorum in this thread by Mutters

Oh no, maybe that means I have done something bad by having more than one SKINNER post, although each one was on a particular nuclear family within a wider group of Skinners ... depends what you mean by family I suppose

... maybe Mutters is going to make me stand in the corner again :(

Mug---heh heh I doubt you need a 'time out'. It will be good to get this clarified. I hate the thought of wasting members' time and want to do things correctly.---Yeates.

A bit of clarification....

We have no problem with having different threads running on the same surname, but not the same people, please. :)

For example....

I might post a question about my 3 x great grandfather, Edward MILSTED, who lived in Tenterden and who married Sarah AUSTEN in 1846.

However, I might also need to ask about my great uncle, Harry MILSTED, who died and was buried in St Albans in 1931.

These are completely separate queries and would merit a different thread for each line of enquiry.

BUT......

If you look at my query about Mary GOLDSMITH, you will see that I have yet to find the answer. What we do NOT want to see is a new thread about her as then, people who had not seen the original research, could be duplicating the efforts made earlier. The best way would be for me to add a post to that thread saying "I am still looking for Mary's death. Can anyone else help, please?"

New members are joining all the time and I am sure that they would like to see the work that has already been done.

I hope that this all makes sense and clarifies matters. :)

Okay Muggy, the Chimp wants you in the corner. Are you ready for that!!! o_O

I looked at what was written in Forum Decorum, sometimes it is difficult to explain what you mean, when you know what you mean and others might not know what you mean, if you see what I mean. :)

So that I don't have to join the Chimp and Muggy in the corner I've altered the wording slightly
should not create several discussions on the same family.

should not create several discussions on the same person within a family.

Hopefully, that goes with Jan's excellent explanation. ():-)
