Mears/Deacon

John.
My Great Grandfather was Thomas Roberts whose mother Mary Roberts married Albert/Edward Gillett/Bacon (as the Bacon family of Ore also used the name Gillet). Thomas married Lizzie Deacon and all my Deacon family were travellers from Sussex and Hampshire. Is this the same family as yours?

but not quite yet! I couldn't resist another bit about the Bacons.

The Hastings and St Leonards Observer of 26 January 1895 has a long article entitled 'The Ore Centenarian: the old lady interviewed'. It's about one Mrs Diana Bacon (who according to the local relieving officer was 103 years old) and refers to a photograph taken to mark her 100th birthday. The reporter sought out Mrs Bacon for an interview.

Here are a few extracts:

'lives in that portion of Ore known as Red Lake . . . a district where poverty abounds'

'Mrs. Bacon lives with one of her granddaughters, Mrs. Roberts, herself the mother of seven boys and girls, and it was in her humble cottage . . . that I found the venerable lady, the picture of contentment and cheerfulness.'

'She is slightly deaf, and her memory is rather weak, but her physical powers are remarkable. She is able to move about the house without assistance...'

'her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bacon . . . live in the adjoining cottage.'

'Most of her sons and daughters, seven in number, have lived to a good age.'

'Mrs. Bacon was twice married, her first husband's name being Shepherd.'
'She could not recollect when her second husband died'

' "Are you a native of Hastings?", I enquired. - "No, I was born on the water, as my parents were coming home from India after my father had got his discharge. My father was a soldier for many years..." '

There are numerous other mentions of her in the newspapers. There is a tree on Ancestry (called 'Isden Family Tree') which has a photograph thought to be Mrs Diana Bacon.

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you, had a problem with my system.
Well the photos are of my grandfather and aunt taken in Ivory Place Brighton.

My grandfather Charles was born to Rebecca Mears who married Charles Bacon in Hasting/Ore in 1880 Charles then married Louisa Deacon in Brighton, Louisa's Parents were William Deacon born Ripe and Elizabeth Willet born Brighton. I have a copy of the photo of Dianne Bacon but until now have not been able to put a name to it.

Please let me know what other info you have. I'm stuck with Martha Mears who I believe was Rebecca's mother, can't find a birth place for them. It is possible they were in the East Grinstead area?

Thanks for the reply. I have not really traced the Mears family as my interest is in the Deacon and Bacon family. Charles Bacon is the brother of Edward Bacon who married my 2xGrandmother Mary Roberts. I do have lots of information on the Deacon family though as William who married Elizabeth Willett father was Thomas Deacon who i believe was the brother of my 3xgrandfather James Deacon. I think they had another brother as well called William

Let me know if your are on Ancestry and i can give you permission to see my tree

Yes I would be interested, however I'm not on Ancestry but I will be able to access it at the library in Worthing where I live are any of your family who live here interested, if so maybe we could get together. I do have a photograph of Louisa Deacon/Mears. I will look it out and post it on the site or you could let me have your email and I'll send it.

I will start a conversation with you and give you my email address. I have lots of photographs of William and Elizabeth Deacon family. Out of interest my avatar is of my Deacon and Rhoades family when camped on Trundle Hill above Goodwood about 1893. My 2xGrandfather Frederick Deacon is standing, his wife Susan nee Rhoades sitting with John Deacon in her arms and my 3xGrandfather William Rhoades sitting in front
