Mary Ann PAYNE was born in about 1833/1834 in East Grinstead, Sussex. I have her in every census from 1841 up to and including 1901 and from 1861 to 1901 she was living in Eastbourne.
She married Caleb GOLDSMITH on 13th April 1857 at Eastbourne Parish Church and his occupation was that of Gardener or Greengrocer/assistant throughout the censuses.
Caleb died on 1st November 1905 and is buried at Ocklynge Cemetery, on the outskirts of Hastings. He shares his grave with 2 complete strangers but there is no sign of Mary.
I have not been able to find Mary’s death registration – there are so many GOLDSMITHs in Sussex - so if she moved away I do not stand a chance of finding her.
I have no idea as to whether or not she was still alive when Caleb died, but newspapers might throw some light on this – a funeral notice or obituary perhaps.
If anyone is able to throw some light on Mary’s whereabouts, I would be most grateful.
Thank you.
