What's the Last Word

Bonzo Dog

Still the Mad Scientist?
The following entry in the registers for St Werburgh, Hanbury, Staffordshire is clear except for the last word:

Sep 16 Mary, daughter of John and Sarah Robotham _ Deage[???]

It's possibly a place name.

Just out of my bed David but that looks like Deage St. from my eyes. ;)

2nd go maybe Deage OF ?? is there a next word- or can you share date please? The 'g' in Deage doesn't close as do others & there is an upstroke just visible, plus the little mark abovethe D

Each entry seems to end with a dash and then a word - is the word descriptive in all cases? eg the last one (the only one I can decipher) is "illegitimate". Knowing what type of word follows the dash might be a help.

Hard one, I'm not even sure if the g is a g or if it is instead a y.

Are there any more children of that couple in the same register, if the word is repeated for other children perhaps it might be clearer in one or more entries.

Draycott in the Clay is close by according to google maps. So could the word be Draycot?

Could be, I've seen on numerous occasions where a baptism is in a different parish to the one the parents live in, their village/town is mentioned in the entry.

If you can marry off the above two, written with the dash as well, to a nearby village/town then that could be the answer.
James and Sarah Shaw-......?
John and Sarah Bednal-......?
Sarah was a very popular name...

At the moment I'm torn between place of abode and mother's maiden name.

Perhaps a perusal of that register say a few years either side of the entry in question might reveal names that are more easily recognisable as a place name or a maiden name.o_O

History of the castle, priory, and town of Tutbury in the County of Stafford. by Sir Oswald Mosley. (bart) Page 131. Google Books
'from a certain gate called Marchington Wood Gate, by banks and hedges to a gate called Stubby Lane Gate and thence by hedges to Draycott Gate............thence to the Park of Hanbury' after a few more hedges and gates.

Draycott is in the parish of Hanbury. Mary could be my 3X great grandmother, as could a cousin of hers, also named Mary daughter of John and Elizabeth Rowbotham, who was baptised in November of the same year. :headbang:

My Mary died in 1874 and census returns 1851 onwards all give her birthplace as Draycott in the Clay. A visit to St Werburgh's churchyard in the hope of finding MI's was planned until I found transcripts posted on line. Not a Rowbotham in sight. :(

A number of John Rowbotham Wills have been found but none so far that could relate to either father.

looks like Deage St. from my eyes. ;)

This was my first thought, but according to my Ordnance Survey Street Atlas for Staffordshire there are no road names anything like it in the area. It could have been renamed though.

Oh well, back to the collections on FMP and the Government Find a Will site, ever hopeful.
