Puts the Heart into Hertfordshire
I am looking at Henry Smith of Belper (Whitemoor) and Denby who wrote a long will in 1680 leaving to his sons and others, and most notably £4 to the poor of Belper in the hands of his son Mathew. Mathew took this and bought almshouses, a charity by his name still exists. I found a transcription on Belper Historical Society website. Also £4 to pay for the curate. He did not mention a son Henry, but a grandson Henry, son of Mathew who died in 1714
However I am also looking at George Smith of Duffield, (Morley Park) who I think is my ancestor. In his will of 1711 he references an obligation under a will dated 16th May 1705 to pay forty pounds to various people which I don't really understand
in the 1857 White's diectory is a listing that in 1705 Henry Smith of Whitemoor "gave" £4 for the poor of Belper and £4 to pay for the curate although it doesnt say in a will. Mathew Smith as above is next listed
I can't see any will for 1705, or any probate date for the 1680 one. Could they possibly be the same person? It can't be grandson Henry in 1705 as he wouldn't have been passed the obligation from his father yet. There is no mention of a George and I haven't found much else about him apart from a birth of a son Mathew in Duffield 1670, and a possible birth of grandson Mathew at Whitemoor 1706
I'm pretty sure George and Henry are related, George and Henry's Mathew both have children called Mathew and Timothy. Can anyone help me understand about the two dates for a Henry? Thank you
