I don't have to do much when transferring to a new computer: the big lad is the expert and he does almost all of it for me. But my main computer, a touch screen laptop, had a chair fall on it a while ago and so the touch screen no longer works and other issues are occurring too. All my Family Tree Maker files were on the laptop and we are going to put them on a touch screen desktop that we have had for a while now but now that we are empty nesters and I have my own study it has been relocated there. The trouble is because they are synchronised with Ancestry it is not simply a matter of copying files from one computer to the other. I have to unlink each tree from Ancestry on the laptop, then go to the desktop and download the tree from Ancestry. A small tree takes about 6 to 8 hours to download and then process all the media. A big tree is taking much longer than that and one of them just seems to be going no where any time soon, so I have stopped the media processing for it now.
The big lad had to find a way to keep the desk top from turning itself off while the media was being processed so it is officially being fed caffeine. He found an app called Caffeine that tricks it into staying awake!
We have been working on transferring the trees (I do have quite a few) for over three days now, and I have not even tried to start working on the all encompassing really huge tree. That will have to wait till I come back from my visit to my two brothers in Canberra, I fly there (on my own) tomorrow for my niece's engagement party.
I have no idea how long it is going to take to complete the transfer of all my trees.
