I am confused (not unusual). I have the will of an ancestor who died in 1780 but the name says Joseph Rawling. He mentions his daughter Rose Bramham wife of Joshua Bramham. Now my confusion arises from Rose and Joshua's marriage because the document names her as Rose Rawdin. Rose's baptism names her father as Joseph but surname spelled Rawden (sigh). The dates and locations are spot on. Is this likely phonetically (mis)spelt +/- a transcription error? It's from the England, Prerogative and Exchequer Court of York Wills 1389-1858 on Ancestry, so not the actual will itself. Would it be worth buying a copy of the actual will from the Borthwick Institute archives? I am accepting it as the correct one as the coincidence of him naming Rose and her husband correctly in the will is too much of a coincidence but I just wanted a second opinion.....

I would certainly go with it.

Back in the day, those who could write would just record what they heard (hence one of mine being recorded as Sarah instead of Pharaoh - don't ask  ) so errors did occur. Also, spelling did not really settle down properly until as late as the beginning of the 20th century. Even these days, mistakes happen.

Thank you. I have gone through her two female siblings records too - they are mentioned in the will and their husbands. Exactly the same happened - married with Rawdin as their maiden names, not Rawling. I am accepting it as the will. Too many coincidences for it to not be true. Joseph was baptised Rawling though - just found his baptism looking for Rawling instead of Rawdin.
