Agneta (c1600) English equivalent please.

The Fearless One. Rest in Peace.
Can anyone advise what the English equivalent of Agneta is please? I'm guessing it might be Agnes but if I was a betting man I wouldn't put money on it.

I have looked at an English equivalent list (Wiki?)but neither Agneta or Agnes appear in it.

Regards.

I've also sometimes found Agnes/Agneta as variants of Ann. If you think of variants of Ann such as Annis (fairly common in some places) or Annette (less common in olden times), it's not hard to see how they might morph into or be confused with Agnes etc.

That had me wondering before I posted, I was thinking was the g in Agneta silent like the one in 'sign', what started me off was because I haven't been able to find a burial for an Agneta Jarvis etc at Thaxted or anywhere else. What I did find though was an Ann Jarvis, wife of James, buried 12 Mar 1650 at Thaxted and an Ann Jarvis, wife of James, buried 11 Jan 1653 at Thaxted.

So my thinking was if the recorder was now interpreting Jacobi as James would he also consider Agneta as Ann, Jacobi and Agneta named a daughter Ann.
Their children's names are Jacobus 1602, Jana 1604, Marie 1605, Anne 1606 and Thomas 1609.

Jfi, there were seven Jarvis families baptising children in the period 1597 to 1630 at Thaxted, three of the husbands were named Jacobi, Jacobi & Agneta, Jacobi and Francisca their children baptised 1628 to 1641, Jacobi and Anne 1628 to 1631, all baptisms at Thaxted.

Jacobus/Jacobi is Latin for James - but if someone was known as Jacob in English, I expect that would be Jacobus in Latin too.

You seem to have a nice tangle of families there. Depending on the children's birth dates, it's possible that Agnes/Agneta and Ann might be the same person; but on the other hand it might be that both were usually called Ann in English, and the minister used different forms in Latin in order to distinguish them.

Thanks for your ideas Arthur, I agree with you, I have found a tree on Ancestry for Jacobus Jarvis spouse of Agneta Rolfe, parents supposedly Jacob Jarvis and Catherine Perry but a search on Free Reg and Ancestry fails to substantiate those claims, nor can I find that couple's marriage, have to try Family Search and FMP after lunch.

I did find a Thomas Jarvesse baptised 6 Apr 1624 son of Johis and Catherine at Thaxted. also Catherine Perrie married Thomas Bridgeman 21 August 1621 at Thaxted, her mother Catherine Baylie, it all has a very messy look, will sort out what means what later.

Jut for interest, with regard to Agneta v Agnes.

From Ancestry, James Jarvise married Agnes Day 16 Oct 1627 at Little Easton.
Free Reg has the same details except the bride's first name is shown as Agneta.
