William died heroically as reported here -
Sunday Mail (Glasgow) 1st May 1927
As the result of an outbreak of fire at the premises of Messrs. James M'Alwraith and Co., Ltd., canvas manufacturers, Broomloan Road, Govan, a member of the Glasgow Fire Brigade Salvage Corps, William White, was so seriously hurt that he died from his injuries in the Royal Infirmary. The fire started early this morning, and the works, which cover a large area, were completely destroyed. Owing to the highly inflammable nature of the contents of the building the outbreak spread rapidly, and it was while the fire was at its fiercest that the tragic accident took place. Along with several of his mates, White went into an adjoining store for the purpose of carrying out certain operation. While doing so, the gable and roof of the premises on fire collapsed, and the unfortunate man was burled in the debris. His comrades at once rushed to his assistance, and, after twenty minutes of strenuous work, they succeeded in extricating him. He had, however, suffered serious. injuries: and about two hours after being admitted to the infirmary he succumbed. White was one of the best-known officers of the Selvage Corps, his work taking him to all the big warehouses and business premises in the city. He was 53 years of age and is survived by a widow and grown-up family.
