The Auction House that is selling this silhouette is saying that there is a name and date (J Nock 1803 Plymouth) at the bottom of the silhouette.

Can anyone find anything about J Nock in Plymouth, please?

Do you think Plymouth may be Plymouth Rock USA? It seems thee were a lot of Nock/Knox there. I don't have time to search all the photos on Ancestry right now and some are private..

That is certainly a thought. I will have a rummage on Ancestry tomorrow and see if I can find anything.

Unless someone else gets there first... ;)
 
The same thought crossed my mind, but there were Nocks in our Plymouth as well. I think the little white and red plume on the bicorne hat (and what a hat it is) belongs to the Royal Fusiliers, but don’t take my word for it. I did wonder if the ‘J’ could be a ‘T’ but that’s not much use either seeing as you can’t see the actual initial :rolleyes: It’s a shame we can’t see the back of the picture in case there’s anything written on it, but as it’s framed, I suspect that’s out of the question.

When I was furkling around earlier I also thought that it might be a T rather than a J as I had found a (very scant) reference to a Thomas.

As far as we are aware, there is nothing on the back. :(
 
He's not in the 1849 biographical dictionary of living naval officers. Active or not. Indicates he wasn't living by then?
 
There are quite a few trees on line where the father is Knox or Knocks but descendants surname is Nock. So perhaps he may never be identified.
 
There is a John Nock born 1781, I believe it said, in Plymouth, US in the early 1800's. My computer is being grouchy tonight and I can't get on Anc. to double check. It did say something about British troops.

He looks a fair bit older than 22 though but you never know. :)
 
I wonder if J/T Nock was the son of a naval or military family. Chatham St Mary Kent has the baptism of John Nock 1768 son of Edward Nock and Catherine.
I believe Chatham St Mary to be part of, or adjacent to, the Royal Dockyard, is that correct?

TNA discovery has a few refs to a Surgeon John Knox on the HMS Bombay that was assigned to the subcontinent, but was sometimes in Plymouth.

I have found the auction for this piece online. It is the profile portrait of an officer. Water colour on paper. The artist is J Nock of Plymouth and it was painted in 1803. At least that’s how I read the description.

I can’t find any more on J Nock but two auction house descriptions of this silhouette. So I guess he wasnt very prolific.
