I think the surname here is Watts - there's the same double letter and blotch as in Battle. And I wonder if the word after that might be Surgeon?

If you are at a loose end, anything on Samuel Slatter, butcher and policeman
b1800+/- 5 years, died 1874 all in Battle who be much appreciated

I’ve had a quick look and there are some mentions of him as a constable when he was giving evidence, but I haven’t found much else - will delve deeper when I’ve done my stint in the garden

Regards the origins of your Samuel.
I see that a William and a Nicholas Slatter were among the
people that joined at what seems to be a reforming of the
Presbyterian or other name Church in Battle in 1780.
This would seem to be William and Caroline whose children
are recorded at the Great Meeting there. They do have a son
Samuel, but he died aged 20 in 1791. So it is possible your
Samuel is a son of of another of the sons of William or perhaps
the Nicholas origin.
Sussex Family History Group have a CD which can be purchased
via Genfair costing £10 either as CD or Download which contains
50 odd Nonconformist Registers for Sussex but do not list the
content. However via my Membership of SFHG I see that those
for Battle are included.

Many years ago I went to The Keep, but found nothing on the origins of my Samuel.
With the recent release of the PR's for Sussex, on Anc. I have been looking,
as you might have guessed), at the Slatter families in and around Battle.
I am compiling the William and Caroline tree in the hope of finding a grandson called Samuel. Both William and Caroline are names he uses for his children, so there has to be a connection, it is just finding it. Another of his sons has the middle name of Swepson, another surname found in Battle, so that might be a clue also, several have his wife's maiden name and her mothers.
Thank you for the info on the cd. It looks like it could answer some of my questions, so I will send for it.

No I haven't seen it, I have been trying to sort out his children, so have nothing
on him and Caroline other than their marriage (1773 in Sevenoaks).
