Welcome Diane. I started off, years ago, wanting to find out about my nan... and then it snowballed, and snowballed... 
All the family history guides tell you to talk to your grandparents and great-grandparents, as though it's that simple! My nan died in 1972, my other grandmother just after WW2 - how I wish I'd been about to sit down with them, with a cup of tea, and find out stuff in minutes that it has taken me years to piece together.
