Areas of Nottingham - Help!

Do we have anyone who knows Nottingham?
My great grandfather Edward Copley was born in Arnold (1855) and brought up his 12 children in DAYBROOK, which I believe is/was part of ARNOLD.
His name crops up regularly in the Police Reports of the "Nottingham Evening Post" - mostly for drunken assaults. (So far I've covered 1879-1883.)But the reports are from BULWELL.

Much as I would love it to be him (well, at least there's lots of information!) - would it be likely that an Ag Lab living in Daybrook would be drinking - and tried - in Bulwell? Or is it more likely that this is another Edward Copley ...?

Any advice will be gratefully received!

The quick answer is yes indeed. Can you give me a few minutes and I'll show you why :).

I've just looked at one entry in the Evening Post for 31 July 1890 and I see an Edward Copley of Duchess Street Bulwell was involved in a shooting. He was a labourer. Is this your man.

Can you tell me what street names for those areas you have you have?

I see from his 1881 marriage certificate that he married Mary Alice Brown in Basford while they both gave their addresses as Daybrook. Although Daybrook was a 'suburb' of Arnold to the north of Nottingham, there was a large area of open land to the west of Daybrook which could have been where the farm he worked on was. Bulwell is only about 3 miles over the 'fields' from Daybrook (and much less from Basford) and it was a small independent town until 1890. It would be an obvious place for Edward to drink especially if he lived in Basford. Maybe he was banned from pubs in Daybrook and Arnold and had to go to Bulwell.

Much more likely is that the offences he carried out were within the jurisdiction of the Bulwell magistrates rather than those of Arnold. I'll check a few more of his offences to see where they occurred.

Well I've checked through a number of reports in the paper from 1868 up 'til the 1890s and I don't think that there's any doubt that he's all one and the same man. The offences are very much the same i.e.drunk & disorderly with the occasional assault and even a shooting.

I suspect he just liked Bulwell as it was a more lively place than Arnold. He'd certainly been going there since April 1879 and he eventually moved his family to Duchess Street, Bulwell. He clearly liked his drink and a fight and he'd have far more scope for that in the relatively "hard" town of Bulwell rather than the much "softer" Arnold.

[I see that in fact he was hauled up before the magistrates in Nottingham for most of his offences and not in Bulwell].

Gosh Flook, thank you for all your hard work! Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner (was dragged off to see the local Raft Races - gosh, it was hot!)

So my great grandad really was a drunken lout ... thank goodness it doesn't run in the family (hic!)
