Can anyone help please. I would like to know how I can research Army marriage records. would they be available online? also perhaps marriages at sea. Thanks

It depends, because not all of them are available online, but a for a good starting point try the free record set "British Armed Forces and Overseas Banns and Marriages" on FindmyPast. These are generally just indexes but the references are enough to order the certificate from the GRO, although the amount of detail in them will vary.

Thank you I will do that.

Any further suggestions please? I don't seem to be having too much luck. Do you think I will find anything on Family Search.? Ancestry no good. I realise it is probably a dead end but worth a try. Thanks.

Thank you for suggestions. From 1865-1873 Owen Kelly was in different parts of India. He married Ann Mcguire. The first child was born 1874 in England. so I am assuming the marriage was somewhere between these dates. He & his wife were Catholics. So I would have thought they married. In 1873 he returned to England. I have looked everywhere and can't find anything at all. I have looked in Ireland where he came from.

How sure are you that their first child was born in 1874?

Baptism - 3 May 1846, Ballivor, County Meath, Ireland
Rose Kelly
Father - Owen Kelly
Mother - Anne McGuire

Archive National Library of Ireland (Catholic Registers)

Marriage date 03 May 1846, Ballivor, Meath, Ireland
Owen KELLY
Anne McGUIRE

Probably just muddying the waters.

Sorry not the right one he was approx 5 years old & i'm not sure if his wife was even alive then. Yes the first child was born i am bout 98% sure in England. :headbang::D Thank you for looking though Iappreciate it

@gillyflower I have found a query with mention of this couple on another site. Information has that Owen served first in the Cavan Militia then 10 th Regiment of Foot later the Lincolnshire Regiment
Depending on which battalion 1st or 2nd, 1st between 1871 -1874 they were operating throughout the Far East, Hong Kong and Singapore. 2nd Battalion was in India between 1865 and 1874. So it is possible they could have been in Singapore when they married.

Many thanks for looking. It is indeed a bit of an enigma. Archie's Mum I think that may have been a query I made. There is speculation about him - but no sources. From 1865 until return to England in 1873 (Chatham) , - were Madras, Port Blair, Troopship Malabar, Chatham & Colchester late 1873/4. :headbang:
