Hi, I am trying to locate a birth or baptism record for my 4 x great grandfather Major Benjamin Sullivan. Everything I have found so far indicates that he was born in Madras, India around about 1783 and his father was Sir Benjamin Sullivan. Sir Benjamin Sullivan served as Justice of the Supreme Court of Judicature, India, for the Honorable East India Company. Major Benjamin arrived in Australia in 1828, eventually moved to Wollombi in New South Wales where he filled the office of Police Magistrate and Coroner for the district. According to Sir Benjamin's will he lists Major Benjamin as his dear friend along with a few other children all listing Sir Benjamin as their father on their baptismal records. However to date I have not been able to locate a baptism for Major Benjamin. Prior to coming to Australia we was a field officer of the British Army.
If anyone can offer suggestions of where I could look or who I could contact to try and find a document confirming his birth of who is mother was would be greatly appreciated.
I have found baptismal records in Madras, India for John Stewart(Stuart) Sullivan born 1781 and baptised 1782; Henry Sullivan born 1782 and baptised 1783, (He became a Colonel and a Knight - Order of the Bath); Sophia Sullivan born 1784 and baptised 1784; Isabella Sullivan born 1787 and baptised 1787. All of these people are listed in Sir Benjamin's will as friends not children, I believe this to be because they were illegitimate.
