Hi all,
I've started properly tracking my ancestors after making a lot of mistakes in my family tree the first time round - currently looking for the birth of a Benjamin Hodgson; he seems to have just appeared in 1849 as that's the earliest record of him i can find! Here's what i know: (B.H. - Benjamin Hodgson)

b. 1825 (maybe 1826?), mirfield area (possibly flockton)
d. 1898, flockton - he's buried here too.

married Ellen Naylor on 11th March 1849 at the Parish of Thornhill - his father, James Hodgson, is mentioned here. He was a coal miner, as was his father.

1861 census, flockton - him, Ellen + 5 of their kids (Mary, Henry, George, Eliza, Ada)
1871 census, flockton - him, Ellen + 6 of their kids (Henry, George, Eliza, Joseph, Charles, Benjamin)
1881 census, flockton - him, Ellen + 4 of their kids (Henry, Charles, Joseph, Benjamin) + apprentice William Edgeworth
1891 census, flockton - him, Ellen + 3 of their kids (Henry, Joseph, Benjamin)

there are also baptism records for the majority of their children available online, as well as several marriage records for their children, where his & their names match up.

as he was born 1825 & married at 24, witnessed by his father James, i don't believe he had any previous marriages, so this rules out:
an 1851 census in York of a lodger called B.H. w/ a wife & son that doesn't match
an 1841 census in Catterick w/ 15yr old B.H. (father listed as Christopher)
an 1841 census in Mirfield w/ 15yr old B.H. (father listed as Charles)
an 1841 census in Bradford w/ 15yr old B.H. (father listed as Benjamin)
an 1825 baptism in Catterick of B.H. (father listed as Stephen)
an 1828 birth & christening in Leeds of B.H. to James & Elizabeth (1828 too far out of possible birth year)

I'm at a loss with where to look honestly, i can't seem to find anything else that fits him or this area. It's unlikely he ever went out of the Mirfield/Flockton/Thornhill area as none of these families came from lots of money, and the men always worked as coal miners starting at very young ages. I've tried looking for parish records in the area but there don't seem to be any before 1837.

Any thoughts or insight or ideas of where to look would be much appreciated

The marriage certificate says that his father James was a Weaver, not a Miner, so maybe have another look at the baptisms you mention.

ah, whilst you're correct this is just a mistake in my message - in my notes i have written him as a weaver, i seem to have confused him with another james hodgson i looked into whilst typing - unfortunately i don't think this is going to change the outcome on the baptisms but i'll be sure to check tomorrow to make sure i didn't confuse myself whilst searching. thanks for pointing it out tho!

Genuk says:
Thornhill parish registers, Flockton Chapelry
Deposited Registers (West Yorkshire Archive Service, Wakefield) - Baptisms: 1717-1872
or buy transcription and index at Huddersfield and District Family History Society

There is a 15 year old Benjamin Hodgson, Coal Miner in the 1841 census at Upper Row, Kirkheaton. In the same household is an Eliza, aged 50, Ind. and Henry, aged 25, a weaver.

It may be worth looking into them.

It seems it's also covered by freereg. There is one Benjamin Hodgson there, born 9 Nov 1826 and baptised 3 June 1827 in Cleckheaton. His father is a clothier, but transcribed as Joseph. If his father had died he could have got the name wrong? Mother Sarah

Ancestry have the parish registers of both Mirfield & Flockton online so could be worth a look if you have a sub. His father James was not a witness to Benjamin's wedding according to the parish register entry, the witnesses being a William SOWERBY, who marked, & a William PARKER. Also remember that the 1841 census records do not show relationships, so the Benjamin found in the 1841 census of Mirfield living with Charles & Amelia HODGSON may not be their son.

What could be relevant is a marriage at Mirfield on 15 September 1811 of a James HODGSON & an Eliza HEPENSTALL but this is only a transcription on Ancestry. However, could this perhaps tie in with the 1841 census record that Jellylegs found for you? There is a burial at Kirkheaton on 1 March 1832 for a James HODGSON, Grange Moor, Whitley, aged 50. Isn't there a Grange Moor near Flockton? There is a Henry HODGSON born c1815 who in various census records gives his place of birth as Mirfield or Liley Clough, Whitley - perhaps the Henry in the 1841 census.
