Camelford House

Tenacious to the End!
I have found reference to Camelford House, Hampstead Heath in an 1858 Probate record. I am assuming that this is the same as Camelford Cottage, in North End, Hampstead (found reference to this in British HIstory Online http://www.
british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=22641&strquery=camel)

I was trying to find the cottage in 1861 in hope that the person to whom probate was awarded was still living there. Suddenly Ancestry will not play ... can anyone help?

North End should be around RG9 /93/ folios 139-143 & folio 146

I am hoping it is Elizabeth Harrison, all leads are pretty slim so far :(

Just searched for an Elizabeth Harrison living in Hampstead in 1861 and the only 2 that popped up were mother and daughter living at 4 Upton Road. :(

Jan

Thank you for looking :)

I am all out of ideas .... How do I find an Elizabeth Harrison? all I know is that she is Catholic and the sister of Robert Harrison :( --- apparently, she set up the charitable institution I am interested in using a legacy from her brother and from his widow

The probate I mentioned is his widow (Charlotte); he may be the Robert Harrison whose death is registered in the St Marylebone district in 1855 -- but I've been unable to confirm this from a will/probate

He and his wife were living in Sussex Place, near Regent's Park in the 1851 census [HO107/1490/972/40]; so I know he was a Merchant in the the Canadian trades, born c 1796 in Hackney

Then again he may have died on the Isle of Wight, as this is reported to be the home of his widow on her probate ...

I have come across reference on one website to another brother called William who apparently helped found the institution (but other sites I have looked at only mention Elizabeth) -- I did find a William and Elizabeth Harrison brother & sister both born Hackney c1800 +/- 10 years [HO 107/1506/813/35], but how do I know it is them?

There is an Elizabeth Harrison age 60 (b1801 St Georges) on the 1861 census RG09/278/71/43, at 4 Sutton Street, St Georges who gives her occupation as 'proprietor of houses' - I cannot make out her marital status though.

You have probably seen this:-

The mission was founded from Kingsland and from 1862 was based in a rented room in London Road. In 1879-82 the hall of St Scholastica’s Retreat was used as a chapel. The Retreat (essentially almshouses) was founded by William Harrison and his sister Elizabeth, using an endowment from the estate of their brother Robert (died 1852) and his widow, Charlotte Scholastica. It served forty poor Catholics over sixty years of age, housed in self-contained dwellings designed by E. W. Pugin and built in stages between 1861 and 1874. (The buildings were demolished in 1972 and the Retreat is now based in Princes Risborough, Bucks.)

Thank you :)

I had seen that [and bookmarked it in my unorganised fashion] and that reminds me of why I had the date 1852 in my head for Robert's death, so he definitely isn't the Robert registered in St Marylebone that I found earlier

{Edit:}
and I am not sure how likely he is to be any of these Roberts found on FreeBMD

Deaths Mar 1852
HARRISON Robert Sheffield 9c 219
Harrison Robert Bradford 9b 73

Maybe he died abroad? Charlotte was from Ireland he may have died there visiting her family ... would he have travelled to Canada to be involved in the Canada trade? (I don't assume that would be necessary).

If only they had a less usual name, and were CofE so that I could find parish records, or the websites I've found already had all this info ...

Ooh! Look what I have found:

Hampshire Advertiser, 11th January 1868
The will of Miss Elizabeth Harrison, of King Edwards Road, Hackney, was sworn under £40,000. She has bequeathed to the Superioress of the Orphanage, Norwood, all her jewellery, not otherwise bequeathed. There are several legacies to the Rev. J.P. Kaye and to her other executors, and annuities and legacies to her relatives, all free of duty. The residue of her property she leaves for the benefit of the institution called the St Scholastica Retreat.

Working back from this date, I have found the death registration of an Elizabeth Harrison in the December quarter 1867 at Hackney registration district, aged 69, volume 1b, page 303.

I'm lost for words ... you are a wonder

My interest in the Retreat is due to the Civilian War Dead Memorial, and it has grown outside of what is useful to that project; so it will have to be put aside for a while ... but my interest in it is probably going to become a full-fledged project in its own right.

I just wanted another little concrete fact about Elizabeth before I made a summary for the Civilian War Dead thread, so THANK YOU very much indeed :)

Okay, so it is 10 years earlier, but this looks like Elizabeth in 1851:

HO107, piece 1506, folio 213, page 35
1, Woburn Place, Well Street, Hackney

HARRISON, William Head Unmarried M 48 1803 Retired Builder b Hackney, Middlesex
HARRISON, Elizabeth Sister Unmarried F 53 1798 b Hackney, Middlesex
BRAZIL, Eliza Unmarried F 21 1830 Servant Wicklow, Ireland

I thought that it might give us some clues to find her in 1861.;)

Oh great! that is the 1851 census that I had my beady little eye on ... but several attempts with the 1861 later ...:( ... I'll take a little rest and come back to it refreshed

Thank you again:)

Yay! Found her in 1861!! :D

Just a couple of snippets which you may not have -

Morning Post 2nd July 1838
On the 30th June, Robert Harrison Esq., of Avenue Road, Regents Park to Charlotte, daughter of James Haly Esq., of Cork.

London Standard 13th September 1852
On the 7th inst., at Bregenz, on the Lake of Constance, of severe bilious inflammation, which lasted six days. Mr. Robert Harrison, of 18, Philpot-lane, and 20, Sussex-place. Regent's Park, merchant, aged 57.

There is a PCC will for Robert Harrison proved London in 1852 - I've only glanced at it, but I did see the name Elizabeth Harrison.......

Oh Ann 8(:-)

Thank you:), I had made a mental note to look up on Ancestry a will I saw on TNA for Robert Harrison Merchant of Philpot Lane but hadn't yet got around to doing so. I wasn't sure it was him as I had no idea what his business address was.
