Camelford House

There are various law books on Google Books that talk about an 1868 Equity case, Hewitt v. Kaye, involving a cheque for £600 that Elizabeth Harrison had given to one of the trustees of St John's Hospice (another charity she had founded) when on her deathbed. She had died before the cheque was presented for payment. 'The trustees of St. John's Hospice were the Plaintiffs, and the executors and the trustees of St. Scholastica's Retreat were the Defendants'. The case was to determine whether the trustees of the Hospice should be entitled to receive the £600 (it was ruled that they weren't).

Obviously I've not read the case yet but it doesn't seem right to me, not to honour a woman's dying wish:(

So, are you telling me that I have another institution to research?;) Once I am back on researching St Scholastica's as a main project, and have finished the War Memorial obviously ...o_O

I can't set a good example when it comes to sticking to the original project. I have got sidetracked from my sidetracks and have now forgotten where I was going in the first place.
 
Last question:

Is anyone able to find Robert and Charlotte in 1841?

I managed to locate Sussex Place and am satisfied that they are not there, searches haven't thrown up anything ... of course, they may be on their holidays in the Alps or some fashionable place ...

I tried and failed to find Avenue Road in the enumeration district descriptions and then it got to the stage where I'd forgotten which ones I'd tried, and then I just got tired

I shall look at it a little later but I am 100% certain tis them

my only problem is that I am still failing to find the blasted census on Ancestry, what am I doing wrong?

I know I am ill but I am pathetically close to weeping right now :(

Oh don't despair, muggy, it's not you. ():-)

A rogue 2061 has sneaked into that census reference. It should be HO 107/678, book 13, folio 15, p.23.

Their surname is transcribed as HAMSON on Ancestry. If it's easier to find by browsing, try Middlesex > St Marylebone > St John > District 18 > image 13 of 15.
 
Sorry for misleading you Muggy, I am still trying to get used to the 'new' FMP and the census refs are no longer given with the census originals so you have to get them off of their transcription - and I made a mess of it:(. Luckily we have Huncamunca to sort it out.

Only because by some fluke my FMP has reverted to old-style! I am not looking forward to getting the new one back again. :(
 
Lucky you! As an aside when you are forced back onto the 'new' version check your personal details, since the changeover it appears everyone has had a check box ticked that allows them to share your details, so you have to get into your profile and untick if that is what you prefer.

Yuk, that's a horrible one. The image doesn't look as if it's quite in focus, which adds to the usual difficulties with this handwriting. You've done very well to decipher as much as you have. :)
