Although I don’t watch it now, I used to every Monday and Wednesday evenings. We lived with my Gran and, being a staunch Labour supporter who was convinced that the BBC was run by the Conservative party, refused to watch any channel other than ITV. (Note: this may confuse members not from Blighty. Sorry ;) ) Oh yes – on a Tuesday and Friday it was “Emergency Ward 10”. I can’t remember what was on Thursdays…. Off at a tangent again…

Oh yes – Mondays and Wednesday was Coronation Street, which first aired today, 9th December 1960 and is the world’s longest running TV soap opera. Why soap opera? It comes from the fact that soap manufacturers were often the major sponsors of these programmes. But what is more incredible than “Corrie” running for 64 years is that William Roache, who appeared in that first episode, is still in it at the age of 92! :oops:
 
Emergency Ward 10 was a must see for my mum, and an excuse for me to stay up a bit later to watch it as well. On Friday 22nd November 1963 it started, but the news of the assination of JFK came through, and they stopped the programme - I never did see the end as they put it on late at night afterwards :( So if anyone asks what I was doing, I remember it so well (don't ask what I was doing last week- not a clue:eek:).
 
We used to watch Emergency Ward 10 as well. Our favourite was nurse Carole Young.
ITV didn't appear in the West Country until 1961. It was called Westward Television.
I can remember being taken to see the Westward train on the railway sidings. Each carriage had a different show.
We were given badges at that time and mine is still somewhere in the hosue that is more like a glory hole.
Some messages have been in the spam folder. That hasn't happened before.
I have only been popping inand out because I still use the old computer bit I am trying to sort out a new computer.
 
My mum was the complete opposite of Daft Bat's Gran.

We weren't allowed to watch ITV at all! And Emergency Ward 10 was just plain "common". We also weren't allowed to go into the Co-op!
It took me years to realise I wouldn't spontaneously combust if I entered a Co-op!

(Don't tell anyone- but she was born and brought up in a 2 up 2 down in North Watford)
I have never understood where she got her airs and graces from, but I am very glad I managed not to inherit them!

Oh - that was my Dad! No ITV was allowed at all.

Mum and I used to try and quietly watch Coronation Street and were rumbled every time. He was born and brought up in a 2-up-2-down, too, in Mold.

Good old Bill Roache, though. That is really some achievement.

I think your Dad and my Mum would have got on well!

Whereas my Dad rather enjoyed a touch of vulgarity of the Carry On variety or a bit of Music Hall type innuendo.
That didn't go down well with my mother!

Absolutely. My dad was only called Cyril, his real name, when he was being rude. :)
