Although I don’t watch it now, I used to every Monday and Wednesday evenings. We lived with my Gran and, being a staunch Labour supporter who was convinced that the BBC was run by the Conservative party, refused to watch any channel other than ITV. Oh yes – Mondays and Wednesday was Coronation Street, which first aired today, 9th December 1960 and is the world’s longest running TV soap opera. Why soap opera? It comes from the fact that soap manufacturers were often the major sponsors of these programmes. But what is more incredible than “Corrie” running for 64 years is that William Roache, who appeared in that first episode, is still in it at the age of 92!
