Death of Lipman Lipman

Hello,

Lipman Lipman died in 1874 in London. However, there is a photo in the Public Member Photos & Scanned Documents section on Ancestry for the same death, giving the name as Lipman Eliezer Zeph Lipman. Can anyone view this record for me? My 4x great-grandad was Eliezer Lipman, but I know nothing of him other than his name. This may shed some light.

I'd appreciate any help!

Adam

I don't know if any Directory listings will help you to clarify who might be Morris's father but there are the following:

London Land Tax Records, Portsoken, 1842, Lipman LIPMAN, Elliston St
1845 Post Office Directory, Lipman LIPMAN, King of Prussia Public House, 98 Middlesex Street, Aldgate
1848 Post Office Directory shows Lipman LIPMAN still at King of Prussia
1845 Post Office Directory, LIPMAN Philip & Son, Pencil Manufacturer, 8 Old Castle St & Lewis Philips LIPMAN, Pencil Manufacturer, 3 New Rutland St
1848 Post Office Directory shows Philip LIMAN & Son still at Old Castle St but Lewis Philip LIMAN is now at 44 Bedford Street
London Land Tax Records, Portsoken, 1860, Lewis LIPMAN, Little Still Alley, Coffee House
London Land Tax Records, Portsoken, 1864, Lewis LIPMAN, Houndsditch
1856 Post Office Directory shows Lewis LIPMAN at Phil's Buildings, Houndsditch, Beer Retailer & Coffee Rooms
1856 Post Office Directory shows Lewis Philip LIMAN, Lead Pencil Manufacturer at 16 Paradise Row, Bethnal Green

It could be that Lipman LIPMAN of the King of Prussia is the same person, or related to, Lewis LIPMAN Beer Retailer & Coffee House Owner

Did you ever buy Morris's Marriage Certificate and if so what was the profession of his father? This might help to narrow down the search for him.

Janet

Thanks for all of that! A book gave his father as Eliezer Lipman, a dealer. But I can't find any records for a man by that name until yesterday when an Ancestry tree said Lipman Lipman had a middle name of Eliezer. Naturally I was skeptical, as Ancestry is so often wrong.

You can definitely rule out Lewis Philip LIPMAN, Pencil Maker, as he is living with his father Philip LIPMAN in the 1851 census of St Mary Whitechapel and is shown as unmarried.

Lewis LIPMAN, Victualler, is in the 1851 census of St Botolph, Aldgate (HO107/1524, folio 87, page 57), and is shown as aged 52, born Aldgate, living with wife Mary aged 60, also born Aldgate, and daughters Rosa & Fanny.

I wonder if this could perhaps be a pointer to the fact that Morris's father is indeed Lewis?? 1861 census of St Botolph (RG9/211, folio 15, page 26) shows Lewis & Maria LIPMAN living at Still Alley with two granddaughters named Sarah, one aged 17 and the other aged 14. I note that in the 1851 census of Whitechapel, Morris & Rosetta LIPMAN have a daughter Sarah, aged 4, but unfortunately the 1861 census records for Morris & Rosetta seem to be missing on both Ancestry & FMP, so I cannot check if their daughter Sarah is living with them.

I really do think you need to buy the marriage certificate of Morris & Rosetta, if you do not already have it, as without this vital piece of information you are searching blind especially as their baptismal & burial records are Jewish so not readily available online.

Newspaper article in London Evening Standard in 1857 which states that Morris LIPMAN, a Jew, aged 29, General Dealer of Petticoat Lane was charged with feloniously receiving a £50 Bank of England note knowing it to be stolen.

Lewis LIPMAN a Beer Shop Keeper of Field Place, Houndsditch was fined £10 for selling gin without a licence in February 1848.

Thanks. I do have an extract of the marriage from a book, but I do agree that the marriage certificate would most likely be helpful in identifying his father. Especially as he is living with Lewis Lipman in 1841.

You blew me away!! I researched Lipmans years ago for a friend in Long Island, NY. Would you be related to a present day David Lipman?? Or is the name quite common. His ancestors lived in London and some were tailors, etc.

Unfortunately due to a computer crash, I no longer have the information but will poke around my old backup hard drive to see if any documents survived.

Both my grandad and great-grandad were named David Lipman but I don't suppose that's the same person you're talking about. There may well be a connection somewhere but my Lipmans were general dealers before they began marrying into the Anglican population, starting with Benjamin Lipman in 1873. I'd still like to see what you have!

Probably not much and it was about 10 years ago. David asked me to see what I could find and a good friend who has Sephardic Jew in her background dug into the London Jewish records for me. His ancestors were pretty Orthodox btw (so is my friend David), so will poke around.

As is normal, they all lived in the same area of London and worked in the same type of service jobs. I grew up in Toronto in a Jewish enclave and it was the same in the 1950's. Usually the clothing industry.
