Descendants of Isaac BAILEY, 1787-1863

As in a previous thread, I am still not totally convinced as to the accuracy of Isaac BAILEY and his bloodline so I have tried a cross reference via Mary BAILEY (granddaughter, 1845-?) in the 1851 census.
As you will appreciate, I don't want to "make it fit", assume, or jump to convenient conclusions (I have not found any other census, marriage or death for Mary so far as I am still concentrating on Isaac).

1851 census, South Parade, Thorne, Yorkshire.
Isaac BAILEY Head 65 Married 1786 Beer house keeper and farmer Skyhouse, Yorkshire.
Mary BAILEY Wife 67 Married 1784 Darrington, Yorkshire.
Thomas BAILEY Son 22 Unmarried 1829 Farmer's son Thorne, Yorkshire.
Mary BAILEY Granddaughter 6 - 1845 Scholar Thorne, Yorkshire.

There is a baptism for Mary Elizabeth BAILEY (possible granddaughter) on 1 May 1845, Thorne (FHL Film Number: 0919420, 0919373).
Father: William BAILEY
Mother: Mary Badger

.... and a baptism for William BAILEY (possible son) on 29 November 1815, Thorne (FHL Film Number: 0919420, 0919373)
Father: Isaac BAILEY
Mother: Mary

1864 probate.
Isaac BAILEY, late of Thorne, York - Innkeeper. Died 15 August 1863 at Thorne (Effects under £20).
William BAILEY, Kingston-upon-Hull, shipowner, son, one of the executors.
.... which looks like a possible match for my Isaac (although William is rather "well heeled").

As per the previous thread, the 1881 census for William also shows a brother John "retired ship owner" but (whilst John cannot be found elsewhere in 1881), John was a humble publican !

However, there is a baptism for John BAILEY on 9 April 1820, Thorne (FHL Film Number: 0919420, 0919373)
Father: Isaac BAILEY
Mother: Mary

Baptism for James BAILEY on 22 November 1818, Thorne (FHL Film Number: 0919420, 0919373)
Father: Isaac BAILEY
Mother: Mary

Baptism for Ann BAILEY on 21 August 1822, Thorne (FHL Film Number: 0919420, 0919373)
Father: Isaac BAILEY
Mother: Mary

Baptism for George BAILEY on 5 December 1824, Thorne (FHL Film Number: 0919420, 0919373)
Father: Isaac BAILEY
Mother: Mary

Baptism for Mary BAILEY on 14 May 1826, Thorne (FHL Film Number: 0919420, 0919373)
Father: Isaac BAILEY
Mother: Mary

Baptism for Thomas BAILEY on 25 January 1829, Thorne (FHL Film Number: 0919420, 0919373)
Father: Isaac BAILEY
Mother: Mary

So .... as you can see, I have a number of possible children for Isaac and Mary BAILEY, but I can only ever find Thomas living with them (1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871 census') which doesn't inspire confidence.

As an aside, is there any significance that the FHL Film Numbers are the same for all baptisms ?

William Bailey married Mary Badger Ainley in 1843. She is living in Hull with three children in 1851 the youngest only one month, which would explain why Mary is with her grandparents. Presumably William was at sea at the time. ( HO107, piece 2363, folio 550, page 21)
Sister Ann is in London with her brother John (licensed victualled) HO 107, piece 1487, folio 195, page 43.
There are two Marys with different parents so it is impossible to tell which is still alive in 1841. There are also two Georges but it would appear that it is the son of John And Mary who survived.
You probably need to find burials for Thorne to see if or which of the other children died before 1841.

I have William BAILEY and wife Mary Badger AINLEY and seen the 1851 census of "a" Mary B Bailey but (other than Walter and having servants) it's not concrete.
I have John's sister Ann (Bailey/Meadows/Armatige) staying with him at the Kings Arms.
What I am trying to confirm is the list of children baptised all being children of the same Isaac - as I say, only Thomas is consistent. Having said that, I have only found one Isaac living in Thorne (there are two listed in the same directory but I think this is because the same man is listed under two occupations - both of "South Parade").

I have deleted the 'prominent' William Bailey and Mary Badger Ainley three times from my tree and each time had to re-instate them as everything points towards them. Unfortunately, it leads to Royal connections which I find hard to believe - all my lot were farmers, publicans and builders !

Having said that, Walter (one month old in the 1851 Hull census) does fit but I haven't come upon the "Jane" or "Emily A" elsewhere as children of William and Mary. A birth, baptism or marriage certificate for William might help confirm his father's name and occupation.

OK, having now checked, Emily Ainley BAILEY (b: 1849) in the 1851 Hull census does fit especially as the baptism shows William BAILEY & Mary Badger (mmn AINLEY) but it's not helping confirm anything about my "target" Isaac so I'm following a connection that's still not confirmed.
(Emily died in 1852, hence no further documentation).

.... That's not to say "well done for finding it Londoner" :)

I'm just trying not to get sidetracked (especially if this William and his offspring are not part of my tree).

According to Genuki the parish records for Thorne are held by the incumbent with transcriptions of Christenings and Burials at Doncaster Archives. Were you planning a trip up north? If not, they might respond to an email request.

Have you got the marriage of Isaac Bailey to Mary Pool 8 Nov 1814 at Fishlake?
It's only circumstantial evidence but William Bailey and Mary Badger Ainley had a child with the middle name Pool. I didn't write down the date but I came across a death notice while looking for information about William.

Ancestry have the Masters certificate for William which shows he was born about 1816 at Thorne and was at sea up to and including 1849/50. The partnership with Leetham started in 1854. So it looks like he did well during his time at sea.

Ann Bailey b Thorne Abt 1822married 1) Thomas Meadows in 1854 ( St Geo Han Sq Reg Dist) he died before 1861 when she is living at Limehouse as a baker employing one man. ( sorry I forgot the ref)
2) George Armitage 10 Apr 1864 at St Pancras, both widowed and her father Isaac Bailey deceased
She is with her brother John in 1871 as Ann Armitage and I think with his children in 1881 although the census is unclear and seems to have them as her children!
Have to leave this for now as visitors due shortly!

You have both been really busy, I already had quite a lot of it but confirmation is good, plus there are some very useful additions.
Thank you :).

The parish records for Thorne are held by the incumbent with transcriptions of Christenings and Burials at Doncaster Archives. They might respond to an email request .... Nicely found, I'll give that a go :).

The marriage of Isaac Bailey to Mary Pool on 8 November 1814 at Fishlake I already had.
James Pool BAILEY (1860-1861) is a new one. Is the Hull Advertiser of 5 January 1861 an obituary ?
I also have a "Henry POOL, 5 years old, visitor to John BAILEY in the 1851 census" (circumstantial, but never-the-less interesting).

I have previously found the Masters Certificate for William, but I can now add a potted history of "Bailey & Leetham" together with the shipping company flag.
As you say, it looks like William "did very well for himself". Unfortunately, this confirms the later royal link by marriage (I was hoping to avoid that :().

I already had the marriage of Ann BAILEY to Thomas MEADOWS in 1854 and Ann MEADOWS (nee BAILEY) to George ARMITAGE in 1864.
Also Ann as a baker in Limehouse in 1861, with her brother John in 1871 and John's children (Mary, John & James) with her in 1881 but it's good to have all these things confirmed.

Finding the marriage certificate of William BAILEY and Mary Badger AINLEY deserves a special prize :).

Interesting that the baptisms of William (1815), James (1818), John (1820) and Ann (1822) - Isaac is a labourer ?
Baptisms of George (1824), Mary (1826) and Thomas (1829) - Isaac is a butcher ?
1828 Pigot's directory - Isaac is a butcher.
1837 directory - Isaac is listed twice, a butcher and a beerhouse keeper.
1841 census - Isaac is a farmer.
1843 marriage of William and Mary - Isaac is a farmer.
1848 marriage of John and Elizabeth - Isaac is a butcher.
1851 census - Isaac is a beerhouse keeper & farmer.
1856 marriage of John to Emily - Isaac is a butcher.
1861 census - Isaac is an innkeeper.
1863 death / 1864 probate - Isaac is an innkeeper.

I also have a considerable number of land tax and poll registers for Isaac in Thorne but, of course, no address or occupation are given.

The links with William also adds a little more credibility to the 1881 census where his brother John BAILEY is visiting - a publican but listed as a "retired ship owner" !

Nice work :)

Also confirmed in FS - born 1860, died 1861.
Soooo many children died so young in those days !

Interesting links one comes across sometimes. Mary Badger AINLEY who married William BAILEY. Her father Samuel lived next door to Isaac BAILEY the father of William

I noticed that. Samuel was a farmer, perhaps Mary brought some money to the marriage?

Landed propriator in 1861, possibly retired publican in 1871.
William left £ 360,000 in 1882 so "the boy did well" .... I hesitate to think what that would equate to in today's money !

All that hard work by you good people to fill in the gaps with Isaac (my 3rd great grandfather) and his descendants and today I find that someone has copied the whole lot onto their tree without so much as a 'by your leave'.
One would have thought that 67 documents (just for Isaac) would have prompted at least a "thank you".
It does leave a bitter taste but, as this forum has proved, there are still some polite and good people out there !

That, Phil, is one reason I don't have my tree anywhere on line.

It can be annoying when you put information and then someone lifts it without so much as a thank you or a kiss my gluteus maximus. Yet I have found vital information on specific individuals and have contacted tree owners with the info only to be totally ignored. It isn't as if these people don't visit their trees, if you look at the persons profile they have visited every day. I've even checked their trees to see if they have updated with the new info, but no.
