Edward Breeze of Kensington

Thank you very much Ann. Yes that will be him. I think he donated the articles but it was his wife who gave them out.

OK, here's one...... What are javelin-men ?

"The Sheriff, Edward Breeze, Esq. and highly respectable escort, attended by the javelin-men, arrived at the Radnorshire Arms Hotel, from the Sheriff's residence at Knighton"

By the beginning of the C19 the provision of the escort had become a tradition rather than a necessity, and the heavy armour and arms of the soldier had given way to the solitary pike-like weapon called a "javelin" carried by the "javelin-men," as the Sheriff’s retainers came to be called.

I have found an announcement of a marriage in the Hereford Times dated 2nd May 1863. It says that the bride was the niece of Mary Ann Breeze. The bride was Jane Meredith the daughter of Mr  Meredith of Kensington.

Luckily, FMP have an image of the marriage register.

Charles Knill married Jane Meredith on 28th April 1863 in Knighton, Radnorshire.

Could someone take a look and tell me what it says the profession of Jane's father William, is please.

I want to say Grocer - but in truth I do not know.
I see the marriage was by licence not banns.

I have tried to find William a grocer on the 1861 census without success

Thanks MollyMay, that is what I thought it said but wasn't sure. I can't find him either. Seems there was a lot of to-in and fro-in between London and Knighton back then. Not the first family I've come across.

See if you can lay your hands on a directory of the day - say 1862 - to see if there are any clues in there. :)

I see from the 1871 & 1881 census Jane gives London c1841 as her year and place of birth - not a lot of help.
I have tried to find William in 1851 too - still no grocers!

I have looked through the births on freebmd and have found a likely birth for Jane.

Births Mar 1840
Jane Tunley Meredith Kensington 3 243

Her husband Charles Knill dies on 12th April 1895 in Bridge Street, Knighton. His probate is left to Jane Tunley Meredith, his widow.

The surname Linley is also mentioned and there's a marriage between an Edward Breeze and Mary Ann Davis where two witnesses are surnamed Linley. I'll get back to you on this.

Looking at this again on Anc - the Linley surname just could be Tunley!:D

Why I'm putting myself ( and all of you) through this is because I'm trying to prove the marriage found by Moo as Edward and Mary Ann's marriage.
12 Sep 1815 at Holy Trinity Clapham, parish of Lambeth.
Edward Breeze to Mary Ann Davis.
Witnesses: Richard Linley; Sarah Linley; Charlotte Hudson; William Hudson; Edward Rigby or Ripley and Richard Corp?????
If Jane was the niece of Mary Ann then Mary Ann is :-

The sister of William Meredith.....or
The sister of his Wife....or
Jane is the the niece on the Breeze side of the family and has no connection to Mary Ann at all except through marriage.

I think I need a lesson in escapology... I'm tying my self in knots here.

There is a Richard and Sarah Tunley plus daughters (?) on the 1841 census in Bridge End, Llanbister, Knighton - HO107 p1455 b11 f5 p4

Looking at this again on Anc - the Linley surname just could be Tunley!:D
I think you're right.

in the 1861 census she is a Ladys Maid for Mary Ann Breeze in Knighton. She says she was born in Walham Gree, Middlesex.

On this census it gives the initial of her second name as 'J' but if you look at the original census the house servant is a Mary Thomas. The 'T' in Thomas is the same as the 'J' for Jane's second name.

If 'T' can be confused with a 'J' then it is possible it could be confused for an 'L' too.

I think I will go along with the marriage that Moo found. There are a few to many coincidences for it not to be.

Could someone take a look and tell me what it says the profession of Jane's father William, is please.
There is a Mary Tunley Meredith who gets herself married 1st July 1865 and on that cert. William's occupation looks even more like Grocer......:)

Ann

ooooh thank you Ann. But why Tunley? Did William Meredith marry a (nameless) Tunley?

It is too early for the Tunley Meredith girls but could be the grandparents

Evan Meredith married Jane Tunley 31/12/1796 in Knighton

Evan and Jane Meredith baptised a son William on 19/11/1809, so who did this William marry and is Jane b1840 his daughter?
