William Evans was born 31 May 1861 in the Union Workhouse, Stanton Lacy, Shropshire. He was the illegitimate son of Eliza Evans.

When William Married Sarah Ann Owens on 13 Sep 1887, in Farlow, Shropshire he gives his father as John Wall a Labourer.

Going back to the 1861 census the family (minus William as he was born after the census date) were living at Upper Gaolford, St Lawrence, Ludlow, Shropshire. In the household were:-

John Wall, Head, Unmarried, 34, 1827, Labourer, Overton, Shropshire
Eliza Evans, Boarder, Unmarried, 29, 1832, Washerwoman, Stanton Lacy, Shropshire
Mary Ann, Evans, Daughter, 6, 1855, Scholar, Prescott, Shropshire
Emaly Evans, Daughter, 5, 1856, Scholar, Prescott, Shropshire
John Evans, Son, 3, 1858, Scholar, Stanton Lacy, Shropshire

1871 census has John Wall b.1829, an unmarried labourer, as a border at Oreton Common, Stottesden, Shropshire.

On 30 Nov 1871 John finally makes a honest woman of Eliza and marries her in Farlow, Shropshire.

Having found John in 1871, still single, I can't find Eliza or any of the children.

This appeared in the Worcester Journal on 3rd April 1880

Anyone!

A follow on (or back as the case maybe) Eliza Evans says she was born Stanton Lacy, Shropshire c 1831, on her marriage to John Wall she names her father as Richard Evans a Labourer.

I've searched but have got nothing, maybe she wasn't baptised.

On the off chance can anyone else find her?

Have you found Eliza in 1841 or 1851?

This might just be a red herring but in 1841 a 10 year old Eliza Evans is living with James James and his wife Margaret in Aldon, Stokesay.
James and Margaret have a daughter b1840 also called Eliza.
There is a possible birth reg with the mmn as Evans.
Is this your Eliza with an older sisiter (not that I can find a birth reg for Margaret with father Richard)

There is a marriage in Stokesay of James James and Margaret Evans 5/7/1836 but if this them then according to the 1841 she is 20 then. That would make her only 15 at marriage. Maybe checking the original to sort her age.

The original is on FMP, sadly it was the old marriage entry, no father given for either just 2 witnesses neither of which are recognisable as family.

The baptism of Eliza James on England Births and Christenings FS has it as Hopesay Shropshire 30/3/1840 father James James and Margarett. Then on Bishops Transcripts FS 30/3/1840 same parents and Margaret with 2 t’s but in Hereford. Perhaps look for Margaret and perhaps a sister Eliza in Hereford.

I can't find Eliza in 1891

Anyone.

There is an Eliza/Elizabeth WOOLL on the 1891 census. Born 1829 Stanton Lacey at RG12/2081/101/33. Looks like she is in an institution (a workhouse?) in Ludlow. Listed as a married General Domestic Servant. Could that be her? She is the 3rd entry on the page - it is a bit hard to read.

It is the workhouse, if you scroll back a few pages you find the master listed - George Kilby (?) born Leicestershire and wife Mary
