Back in 1829, the Metropolitan Police was founded by Sir Robert Peel “to serve and protect the people of London” with the standard wage for a constable being one guinea (£1.05) a week.
But it was not until today, 16th March, the following year in 1830 that the Headquarters were set up. This task was down to two Police Commissioners, Charles Rowan and Richard Mayne. They took over a private house at 4 Whitehall Place, the back of which opened onto a courtyard, which was then used as a Police station. This courtyard had at one time been used by Sir Christopher Wren and was known as “Scotland Yard” as years earlier, it had been used by the Kings of Scotland when they visited London.
Although Scotland Yard became the name of the Police Headquarters, it is now based on the Victoria Embankment, overlooking the River Thames.
