Henry Hudson was an explorer, travelling the world in the late 16 th and early 17 th centuries. He left London on 17 th April 1610 on the ship Discovery and, after visiting Iceland, ended up in James Bay, Canada. However, this bay had no outlet to the Pacific Ocean as had been thought and so they cruised about until winter arrived.
Stuck in the close confines of the small vessel (it was only 55 tons), quarrels rose up in the crew. Some of them suspected that Hudson was hoarding food for himself and his favourites and tempers flared when Hudson ordered the crew’s own sea chests to be searched for extra supplies.
Robert Juet, the mate, had been demoted, and he plotted with Henry Green and others to mutiny. Once the homeward voyage had begun, the mutineers seized Hudson, his son, and seven others, casting them adrift in a small open boat today, 22 nd June back in 1611, never to be seen again.
Henry Hudson is now remembered by where he and the others were set adrift – Hudson Bay.
