Emma Chapple SPEAR was baptised on 24th August 1834 in Plymouth, Devon. Her mother was Hannah, a single girl, but who very kindly told Emma who her father was. He appears on Emma's marriage certificate as Charles Henry CHAPPLE, an engineer. How truthful Hannah was, no-one knows, but still... back to the matter in hand.

On Emma's birth registration, accessed via Family Search, could somebody please tell me what it says for her address? Something Cottages.

It looks like the first letter is a "H" as the strokes are similar to the "H" on Hannah. My complete guess is Hic.

I agree with Hoe Cottages - especially as I have recently been delving into a friend's family history and his 3x Gt Grandfather lived in Hoe Cottages in 1849
