Is the first letter of the presisdent's name R and the surname Tapper?Herbert GILBERT (born abt 1814) was discharged from the 33rd Regiment of Foot on 3rd June 1856.
I can read most of his papers but not all, so would appreciated any help that might be forthcoming.

Thank you!He was Brevet-Major D.W. Tupper and was awarded the Turkish "Order of the Medjidie"** during/after the Crimean War. There's an interesting history of the 50th and this is the page that shows this award. It looks as though your man left the army almost immediately after it had returned from Crimea.
