Herbert GILBERT (born abt 1814) was discharged from the 33rd Regiment of Foot on 3rd June 1856.

I can read most of his papers but not all, so would appreciated any help that might be forthcoming.

1) What was the name of the President?

2) Where was he attested in Hants?

Thanks. :)

1) Tupper?

2) A bit more of the document might be helpful, but based on what I can see, there's Lymington at the top, then the place at the end of the middle line looks like Birr, Co. King's. Birr is a town in Co. Offaly (Ireland), which used to be known as King's County. Hants on the next line must be attached to something else.

Ooh! Just had a thought....

Maybe that was where the 33rd was stationed at the time that he attested - although he attested in Hampshire, which is where he was from....

If you see what I mean...

Yes, having seen the whole page, that's the sort of thing going through my mind too.

He was Brevet-Major D.W. Tupper and was awarded the Turkish "Order of the Medjidie"** during/after the Crimean War. There's an interesting history of the 50th and this is the page that shows this award. It looks as though your man left the army almost immediately after it had returned from Crimea.

*There's a page about it on Wikipedia.

Thank you! :D

He was wounded - bullet in the leg - and died just over 10 years later in Ireland. His death certificate has been requested. ;)

This might be interesting. It's the uniform worn by officers and men of the 50th in 1856. Just a little colour if you're writing anything up!
