He Was Really Joseph

One branch of my family lived in and around Burwash, Sussex. Someone else who lived there was Rudyard Kipling, who can be seen at Batemans, Burwash in the 1921 census. I wonder if my lot ever met him…

Born today, 30th December in Bombay, India, Kipling’s first name was really Joseph. ;) But why Rudyard? Because his parents, John and Alice, did their courting at Rudyard Lake in Staffordshire and were so taken with the beauty of the place that they wanted the name to be remembered. :)

One of the stories that Kipling wrote was The Jungle Book in 1894. I remember that I wanted to see The Jungle Book at the cinema when the film came out but, at the age of 13 didn’t want to lose any street cred that I might have had. I ended up taking my 7-year-old brother :D

“Do you like Kipling?”
“I don’t know – I’ve never Kippled…”

Sorry…
