Hello from Sydney. I was born in the UK but travelled to Australia as a 19 year old on a working visa in 1978. Fell in love with the warmer climate and have lived here full time since 1982. My mother had a passion for following family history but she is now in a nursing home and I would like to get involved out of respect for all her long hours of research. I'm a total novice so I may be requesting guidance on a number of occasions!

Hi Imogen and welcome

My take on this absorbing hobby is that it teaches me so much about the way my ancestors lived and what kind of people they were. The answers are often not what I expected or in fact hoped for, but more often I had no expectations anyway and I simply learned about my family. All of this is good, even the bad stuff. After all, it all took place in another time and none of it was my fault. If it hadn't happened I and my family would not be.

Enjoy. It's a brilliant thing to do.
