Help finding a marriage

Charles Henry Colthurst Bromfield was born in 1907 at some point he married a Dorothy (but who) I can't find a marriage.

They are on the 1939 register, Dorothy is enumerated as Widow but the original says Married. Her date of birth on the register says 1901 according to FMP but the original says 14 Nov 1898.

She died in 1971 in Midhurst with a birth date of 14 Nov 1898.

Charles went on to marry Estella Esperanza Fabizi in Chelsea in 1971 but that's a whole different kettle of fish which ended in divorce, I have all the newspaper cuttings.

Can anyone find Charles's first marriage.

Quite a complicated ancestry there. I wonder if he married under one of the family names…..Phillips perhaps? Although I can’t find one. I wouldn’t think with his background that he wouldn’t marry. Scandal.

Just throwing this into the mix - Dorothy Bromfield, 'with son', birth date 14 Nov 1898, born Denver, Colorado - on an incoming New York passenger list, sailed from Bologne, France, 8 Aug 1931.

I was about to suggest they may have married overseas?

Can't stop long (tooth extraction in an hour! Agh!) but it's so unusual for me to be able to suggest ...

In 1939 the Bromfields have a Burrett Ho. JANNEY with them. American citizen. Born 5 January 1918.

In the 1931 manifesto, Burritt JANNEY (b 5 Jan 1918) is with his mother. Born Toronto Canada of American parents. Address in USA: 644 Salem Ave, Elizabeth, NJ.
Dorothy's entry gives dob 14 Nov 1898, born Denver Colo.

Horatio Burritt JANNEY died 25 Dec 1981 (FindAGrave).

So I would suggest that Dorothy's name on marriage to Charles was JANNEY. Possibly her maiden name (whether born 1898 or 1901, she was very young when Burritt was born.

Wish I could search more but ... got to go! (Wish me luck!)

Jane

According to Ancestry's Canadian Marriages a John Sherborne Janney married one Dorothy Burritt in St James Cathedral, York, Ontario on the 29th July 1916. In the 1901 Census of Ontario, there is a Dorothy Burritt, granddaughter of Horatio Burritt (a Welsh Physician according to the census), her DOB being Nov 14th 1892 - I think this must be your Dorothy. I haven't found a Burritt/Bromfield marriage - yet.

Thanks to Jane for setting me on the right (?) path :) I hope the visit to the dentist wasn't too traumatic :nailbiting:

I can't find a Janney/Bromfield or a Burritt/Bromfield marriage anywhere. I hope someone else has some success :nailbiting:

Can't talk. But I can type! And my dentist (a lovely young man called George) advised me to "do as little as possible for the next few hours". ;) So now I have the perfect excuse ...

@AnnB - the marriage should be Janney/Bromfield ...

Glad you are OK. Yep, I know it should be Janney/Bromfield, but I thought she might have used her maiden name in a second marriage :)
