Help Finding Marriage

Goes out of her way to help
Would like to find the marriage of Thomas Shilton b.1832, Parton, Moresby, Cumberland & Rebecca Cornthwaite b.1837, Whitehaven, to parents Isaac Cornthwaite & Ann Byers. (not to be confused with Rebecca Cornthwaite born in Ulverston, Cumberland).

There are a lot of trees with Rebecca in them on Ancestry but only up until the 1851 Census HO 10/163//2436/223/39, with her parents in Parton, Moresby.

1861 Census RG9/3945/83/19, Rebecca is the wife of Thomas Shilton with 3 daughters. Living next door are her parents, Isaac & Ann plus her siblings.

Rebecca dies in 1867 (some have confused her with the Rebecca Cornthwaite in Ulverton, Cumberland, who died in 1864.

Some trees also have her as Rebecca mmn Lawrence, but think people are assuming that because their first daughter Eleanor born 1855, Parton, had the middle name of 'Lawrence' but I could be wrong....

Thomas remarries in 1874, to Sarah Carruthers mmn Munroe.

Eleanor's mother's maiden name was definitely CORNTHWAITE - according to the GRO. :)

Have found a daughter Ann Jane Shilton on Ancestry GRO Birth Indexes 1851, June 1/4, Vol XXV, Pg 164 but if you go on the GRO website, search births, she isn't there so have sent in a correction which will probably take a few days for her to appear & hopefully the mother's mmn will be Cornthwaite. That said, if Rebecca was born in 1837, she would have been young having a child in 1851 so that may account for no marriage.

Thanks @MollyMay for finding that.

Think the confusion has come about because of the 1871 Census, which gives an Ann aged 18, born 1853, so people have assumed that it is Ann Jane but clearly it's not! When you zoom in on the 1871 census, you can see that the age is 11 but the second '1' has a bit of a flourish so has been transcribed as 18.

Shame that so many trees have the wrong child attached to the wrong parents :(

Ann Shilton birth is Dec 1/4, 1859, Whitehaven, Vol 10B, Pg 466. MMN: Cornthwaite.

Okay, @dizzyme, I couldn't find a marriage for Thomas and Rebecca. Cumberland is quite well covered by digitised newspapers but I couldn't find anything there either.

I was intrigued by Eleanor's middle name of Lawrence, however. I went back in both families and couldn't find a Lawrence connection on either side.

As above, Rebecca Cornthwaite, daughter of Ann Byers, was baptised in 1836.

However, Rebecca Lawrence, daughter of George Lawrence and Eleanor was baptised 6th Feb 1837, same church. Eleanor's maiden name? Cornthwaite. That Rebecca had an older brother, ex-Merchant Navy, who emigrated to Oz and died aged 47.

You may already have been through all this, however.

Thank you @Bay Horse.

Well spotted! I hadn't delved further than looking at the parents. So it looks like maybe Isaac Cornthwaite & Eleanor (nee Cornthwaite) Lawrence are brother & sister.

My line is actually the Shilton's & for some reason unknown, they are difficult to locate marriages for

Now looking for the marriage of Isabella Shilton, b.1833 Parton, d/o John & Mary Shilton.

In the 1861 census above, she is listed as 'Isabella Crag' married, although there is no husband with her at this time. Also, there is her daughter Mary Jane Shilton, b.1853, so the marriage would have been after this date.

No joy in tracing Isabella after 1861, although Mary Jane is a servant aged 14 yrs, in the home of William Irving in Harrington in 1871.

Have a look at the 1871 census RG10/5246/87/55 - Kirby Street Court, Cross Canonby, Cockermouth
Widowed Isabella Morrison b1833 Parton plus her daughter Mary Jane Morrison b1853 Parton (and a lodger)
Both Isabella and Mary Jane are labourers at a colliery.

Snap Jan :D

There is a death of Francis Morrison June qtr 1865 Whitehaven 10b345 - from the GRO his age was 57 (so he was some years older than Isabella - if this is the right chap)
Whitehaven News 6th July 1865
W. Lumb Esq., coroner, held an inquest at the Infirmary, Whitehaven, on Thursday last, on view of the body of Francis Morrison, aged 57. Deceased was injured at Overend Quarry and had lingered in the Infirmary until Wednesday last. A verdict of accidental death was returned.

Could this be Isabella marrying again?
Cumberland Paquet and Ware’s Whitehaven Advertiser 24th November 1874
On the 21st inst. at the Register Office, Whitehaven, Mr Joseph Mossop, coalminer, to Mrs Isabella Morrison, both of Parton.

Ahhh.... so I had the wrong Mary Jane in 1871  :headbang: Months of not doing any research is catching up with me lol

Thank you all for the above info. Shame the historic marriage records aren't available in digital form like births & deaths. Given that she has married under the surname of Shilton, it wouldn't have cast any light on her being 'Crag' in 1861, if it is her. Off to do more digging.....

I saw that as well, @MollyMay . So.... The 1871 census has Isabella MORRISON and her daughter Mary Jane in Cross Canonby. (5246/87/55

Both are from Parton and there can't be that many Isabella SHILTONs in that neck of the woods... can there???
There is another Isabella Shilton, baptized 06 Oct 1833 at All Saints, Cockermouth to John Shilton & Jane West. John's occupation is Joiner.

The family have moved to West Derby by 1841 & there is a marriage for Isabella Shalton to John Davies on 19 Aug 1866 in Liverpool. Her father is John Shalton, Joiner so think the above Isabella Shilton is the correct one.

Did get a digital copy of Mary Ann Shilton's birth certificate but that gave no clues as to who her father was.
