If this has been mentioned before, please disregard. What if Henry Berry is really Henry Berry and by the 1871 he had taken the surname of his 'wife'?
Shall have to try getting my head around that one. All children's births appear to be registered registered as Horricks or variations of - even the ones before 1861. Off out to get our flu jabs in a while, so shall have a look when we get back.
Thats fine, having children as Horricks, because that it who she was, Horricks but what I'm saying is that when it came to the 1871, Henry Berry changed his name to Horricks and the rest of the family went back to their original name.
But the mother's maiden name on the births was Stuttle, so she must have been a Stuttle, not HORRICKS. If she is Frances Sarah who married William, she could register them as Horricks - will have to see if I can find baptisms for them with father William - but then why would he keep just one of the children with him? I have looked for a Henry Berry baptism at the right time in Maldon and surrounds, but can't find one. I was wondering if they changed their surname to Berry for 10 years hoping to hide for a while. Either that or the enumerator missed a Berry family off the sheet and just got in a muddle with the surnames.
Henry Berry and Sarah (Frances) in 1861 had a 6 month old Sarah. Why would she have two daughters named Sarah. The older Sarah, born 1854, is with William Horricks. I too went searching for a Berry in Maldon and couldn't find one.
The Sarah in 1861 was registered Frances Sarah and died later in 1861. Another daughter Frances Sarah was born in 1874 - she is listed as Frances on the 1881 and 1891 census.
The Sarah with William in 1861 was registered as Sarah. Sarah (Frances Sarah, the mother) is with her married daughter Frances (b. 1874) Wilcox and her family on the 1911 census. She is enumerated on Ancestry as Mrs Florricks and on FMP as Horricks Wilcox
For what it's worth, I feel that 'Berry' is a red herring, and that its really Henry Horricks. The only time Berry is mentioned is in the 1861 census - there's no evidence it was used any other time, let alone 'for 10 years'. As the original household schedules were destroyed we only see the information copied over by the enumerator, so we have no way of knowing if this is what was originally written or simply a copying error. I think that Sarah born Newington 1854 marries James Smith in Lewisham in 1885, and stays around that area. 1901 RG13/208/108/44 James Smith 66 General Labourer b South Hornsey Sarah 43 wife b Deptford Susan 8 daur b Kingsland Martha 7 daur b Kingsland Lizzie Powell 4 g/daur b South Hornsey SMITH, SUSAN ALICE mmn HORROCKS GRO Reference: 1893 M Quarter in ISLINGTON Volume 01B Page 365 SMITH, MARTHA mmn HORROCKS GRO Reference: 1894 S Quarter in Volume 01B Page 374 I can't find them in 1891 but they should be somewhere near Blackheath Hill as a daughter, Alice Lydia, was buried from that address in 1892. By 1911 Sarah (if its her) is with Martha at 82 Spencer Road, Newington, aged 52 born Lewisham. She is a widow but claims to have been married 32 years, with 11 children born alive, 2 still living, and 10 died (yes, I know )
Thank you @Andromeda I agree - with what we found out before, and tracking them down through the census, I think we came to the correct conclusion - that (Frances) Sarah left William and set up house with Henry (who appears to be the brother of William). I've searched for a death of a Frances Sarah or Frances or Sarah Horr*cks, but cannot find one between 1853 and 1871.
The burial register gives an address of 44 Blackheath Hill. Doing a census street search on FMP, 44 Blackheath Hill is listed under Greenwich, London. There is a household of 10 Horrocks's there - all born Lewisham.
My head is hurting again! I've tracked them back to see if parents Richard & Susan (nee Smith) had a daughter named Sarah who might have married James Smith, but apparently not according to the 1871 census (RG10/775/6/6). The names of the Horrock's children do seem very similar to the Smith children found so far though (I didnt look for all 11 or 12 of them though). Maybe James Smith was related to Susan Horrocks nee Smith?
I know the feeling. Perhaps Susan (nee Smith) was a sister or cousin to James Smith who married Sarah Horrocks. Edit: Ah, missed that bit in your post. Perhaps we should leave it there (trying to go any further with Sarah and James) - after all, we are sure we have sorted Henry and Frances/Sarah now - which is what I set out to do.
