Help with Some Names

If you didn't know, Ancestry now have East Sussex PR's, both transcriptions and the originals

I have been able to see the original of the marriage of my Samuel Slatter in Battle, 1823
but need someone to confirm a couple of the names for me.


Firstly, the smudged name of Mary Hayward's father - I read it as John, but am not sure, it could be James.
The 2 witnesses - Jane Mary? Slatter, James ? Hobbs

Thanks BH. I was seeing Purton or Pruton, and couldn't make my mind up.

Just found a death for a James Purton Hobbs, registered Hastings, 1853, so I think that backs that up.

Great, thank you - I am like a kid in a sweet shop, just found Mary's parents, their marriage and the death of her mother (in childbirth with Mary). Not been able to move backwards on this line of the family for years, so I am a very happy bunny
