Knows where to find the answers!
This is from a marriage at St. Thomas Bethnal Green

Elizabeth Robertson to William Lyus (this is the name Anc transcription and on the GRO listing, but I have my doubts) 6/4/1878

What is the place of Elizabeth's abode 5 Earl's Place - but where?
Any thoughts on the surname of William?

It would have helped if I posted the images as well:rolleyes:

Thank you both - I just couldn't see 'Finsbury', although it was the only place in London that I could think of that might fit.

Lyles was my thought on the surname as well, not being able to find William in 1881.
Elizabeth is back with her parents in 1881 calling herself Robertson again, and entered as single, with a child William age 3 (I cannot find a birth reg:mad:)
RG11/433/52/9.
The Robertsons prior to 1881 are a mystery, no sign of them in 1861 or 1871
Other than the marriage of her father William in 1852 to Elizabeth Carr, and a baptism for Elizabeth dob 13/2/1859 there is nothing (I can find) until they pop up in 1881 in Mount Street, Bethnal Green with 3 more daughters, none of whom I can find a birth reg for:headbang: There is also the large gap in time from the marriage to the birth of Elizabeth - 7 years, then 4 daughters in 8 years. Have I missed something obvious here?
Father William appears in trade directory in1865, as a marble mason of 39 Worship Street, EC. so they were in the London area, but I cannot find them.

Thanks Janet, I missed that one:).
I have found one birth reg for a William Robertson mmn Carr 1869 (Shoreditch 1c 55 - Dec. qt
Nothing so far for Mary Ann b1862c, Emma b1865c and Alice b1865c
I will try an address search on Long Alley for 1861;)

Emma ROBERSON was baptised at St James Shoreditch on 9 October 1864 (born 26 September 1864, daughter of William & Elizabeth, 31 Worship St, Marble Mason.
Thanks, I had just come across that one as well.

Alice born 1865 is my quest, but filling in the wider family might bring forth some clues.

Mary Ann ROBINSON baptised 30 June 1861 (born 14 June 1861), daughter of William & Elizabeth, 42 Long Alley, Marble Mason. Just Alice to find now and I wonder what surname she was baptised under. And, isn't it just typical, she would be the one you are searching for.

Janet

If it's any use, William is at at 41 Long Alley in 1851with his parents and siblings HO107/1533/487/5 - but you may have already found that  They must have liked living in Long Alley.
Yes I have that one, it is the only census sighting I have of William until 1881, in Mount Street, Bethnal Green, where he turns up with his wife , 4 daughters and a grandson. Inconsiderately:sceptical: he died before the 1891 census:ghost:
I have even searched for just occupation, 1861 & 71 - marble mason with no name and nothing like William Robertson comes up:mad::headbang:

Bingo! 1871 census of St Leonard Shoreditch (RG10/442, folio 34, page 11) at 7 Rose Street:

William ROBERTS Head M 43 Marble Mason Spitalfields
Elizabeth do Wife M 43 do
Sarah do Daur U 19 Box Maker? Finsbury
Elizabeth do Daur 12 Scholar do
Mary Ann do Daur 9 do do
Emma do Daur 6 do do
Alice do Daur 3 do
Eliza do Daur 2 months Shoreditch

No wonder the family are elusive! Still can't find a baptism for Alice though.
