Hello from sunny Shropshire, although it is now 1am and has been very cloudy for the last two days anyway
Have been researching both my own and my husband's family trees for the last two and a half years. I thought I would begin with my mother's family name as the least common surname ie. Auty. This turned out to be one of the most common names in the West Ardsley/Dewsbury area of West Yorkshire and may actually be Viking in origin. If this is true, all I can say is that the Vikings were very prolific in the area! Having managed to contact a researcher who's mother was also an Auty, I connected with the correct family line with the help of his fantastic Auty database. Auty/Awty/Autie/Orty/Oty.........who cared how the name was spelt?!
Anyway, it is all good fun and a great interest to have and there have been a few surprising revelations along the way. I administer a family website on My Heritage and the family tree is there for family interest and information.
