Hi All

Hello from sunny Shropshire, although it is now 1am and has been very cloudy for the last two days anyway

Have been researching both my own and my husband's family trees for the last two and a half years. I thought I would begin with my mother's family name as the least common surname ie. Auty. This turned out to be one of the most common names in the West Ardsley/Dewsbury area of West Yorkshire and may actually be Viking in origin. If this is true, all I can say is that the Vikings were very prolific in the area! Having managed to contact a researcher who's mother was also an Auty, I connected with the correct family line with the help of his fantastic Auty database. Auty/Awty/Autie/Orty/Oty.........who cared how the name was spelt?!

Anyway, it is all good fun and a great interest to have and there have been a few surprising revelations along the way. I administer a family website on My Heritage and the family tree is there for family interest and information.

Hi Angela,

Welcome to the site, you'll like it here, a very friendly bunch of people.

Regards.

Hi Angela C|:-),

Welcome to Top Dog the home of friendly and helpful folks.

I have an Auty born West Yorks in my tree, Nanny Auty, she was married to a Peter Waring (1804 - 1886).

Hello Angela - we meet again! Welcome! :D

I see that you are finding your way around quite nicely, so keep posting and we will meet up again, no doubt.

Have fun!

Hi Angela, welcome aboard. C|:-)

I made that mistake, too, in thinking my ancestors' surnames were 'unusual' - until I visited the part of the country where they lived and found there were thousands of 'em, and to complicate matters, all called John and Elizabeth. :D

Hi Angela and welcome to Top Dog from me too C|:-)
We're a friendly lot and hope we can help with any queries you have.
Good luck!

Hello Angela,
Welcome to the forum. I am sure we will all spend many hours happily searching together in the future.
Good Luck and enjoy yourself.

What a lot of lovely welcoming messages! Thank you to all :)

My avatar is indeed a Shropshire rose, Wendy.

Mealymoo, I will respond directly to your Waring thread and yes, I too have a Nanny Awty (note spelling of name, it changed from time to time over the years) in my family tree. She was the sister of a direct ancestor.

Bay Horse, it's worse than that! I was brought up in the area and was only aware as a teenager of one other Auty family. On asking if we were related, I was told we were but from way back! After decades I have finally found out that in my own generation our great grandfathers were brothers and we are third cousins.
