Tim has sent this over, asking if anyone can read it.

I think that the ink has bled too much into the wood for it to be legible, but I bow to others with better eyesight than me.

Ta everso.

Thank you - I will pass that on. :)

Apparently, it was created by a chap named J HILL, who worked mainly in Oxfordshire. No clues as to date, but it is probably sometime in the late 18th Century.

19 ? Marylebone. Last place starts with C. Is that a London address?
Marylebone High Street runs from Oxford Street.
Could that be 19 High Marylebone?

My eyes not as good as anyone else, but, isn''t that & letter 'y' or a 'g' after the L or whatever?-2nd letter in. It's got a tail whatever it is.

Warburton one name study…..not at all saying this name is Warburton, however in 1841 there is a John Warburton MD age 50 St Marylebone. Address is 23 Park Crescent Cavendish Square. According to the one name study he was the son of Thomas Warburton, an infamous mad house keeper who as noted in his will owned property at Westminster, St John, Hackney and St Matthew Bethnal Green. John died in 1845.

You little cracker! That certainly sound like the right chap!

Thank you! {-(^^)-}

There is some wonderful research out there on the mad houses of Hackney. Thomas was infamous for his treatment of patients, having them sleep naked, 3 to a filthy straw bed and beatings requiring medical attention that wasn’t forthcoming. However when he died and John Warburton took over, the changes he made were significant, I’m not certain I have the correct John Warburton but have a Google and read about these asylums.
