Hello everyone.

My name is Rob and I've been researching my family tree on and off for the past 8 years. The main areas of the country I'm interested in are Gwent, Devon and Somerset.

At the moment my stumbling block is on my paternal side. My great (x3) grandfather, Samuel Watkins was born in Bath c1793 but I cannot get any further back. Work commitments mean that I can't take time off to research local records. any help or advise would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Rob

Hi Jan

Thanks for the reply. If I can find any spare time over the weekend I'll dig out as much information about Samuel as I can and post it on the Somerset section.

Thanks again for your help.

Rob.

Welcome Rob How have you got 1793 for Samuel's year of birth? There is a Samuel Watkins baptised on 1 June 1789 at St James Bath, parents Samuel and Martha. Could this possibly be him. If you go by the 1841 census it could be up to 5 years out as they rounded up or down to the nearest 5 years. I've also found some of that in the 1851 census as if they were following old rules. Later census returns were more accurate, but not infallible
