It was at 11pm on Tuesday 4th August 1914 that Great Britain officially declared war on Germany in an announcement made by Prime Minister Herbert Asquith. Prompted by Germany’s refusal to withdraw their forces from Belgium, this declaration was greeted with optimism by the British public, with hope that it would be over by Christmas.
One chap by the name of Amorett, an Italian who ran a fish and chip shop in Haverfordwest, joined the Italian Reservists. A notice in his shop window read, “This establishment will be closed until Christmas.” I have found no record of whether or not he returned.
The “War to end all wars” was not over by Christmas, lasting a further 4 years until the armistice was signed on 11th November 1918 – at 11am.
