Now, how did I miss that? I have been doing Jamaican research for 20 years. Where are you looking AM?? And I have a lot of links I could pass on. I have been promising the Daft Bat I would write up a blurb for the Caribbean but didn't think anyone was looking in those parts.
I have also been doing it "behind the scenes" I guess......didn't figure anyone else was interested, other than my friends on the West Indian groups.

Best we start a thread then Figgs. My interest is only new. Introduced to me by Joanne and her Hetherington thread, but it seems to have eaten up my spare time just the last few days.Now, how did I miss that? I have been doing Jamaican research for 20 years. I just found this thread. The title gave no clue as to the location. I will catch up and then see where we are. But if it is just Tortola, don't get your hopes up. I do have one book that covers more than a few islands (MI's), but I think a lot of the Islands sent their info back to whichever country owned them. As in France, etc.
Back atcha when I catch up with this thread.

Don't get your hopes up, mugsy......very few of the Islands have decent records. However, should you want Jamaican research, then I am your man/woman, etc. LOL.

I usually go thru them every day which is why Half Hour and I pick up on the Canadian ones. But "Who is Mary" did not give off any Caribbean 'vibes' so missed it. I am still sorting it out. And Tortola is not an island I am familiar with, research wise. We had a Caribbean group on Rootsweb, but finding researchers for the smaller islands was next to impossible.
The LDS did a smashing job on Jamaica, but there were still a lot of holes. And also bullet holes in researchers......if they dared to go to the records place at Spanish Town. Once I get this sorted out in my head, I will see if my mentor can help out.
I shall now ask what some would consider an indelicate question, but it isn't to those of us who have people on the Islands. Feel free to mention the words slave, mulatto, coloured and so on. They all have their own columns in the parish record books, and it is not as big a deal as it is in the US.

Are there any more common names than "Mary, Ann or Wilson"??
The one site has a search engine that is awful and it finds every Mary, every Ann and every Wilson. Do you have any idea of where they lived? And is their background British?? As most of that era were.
Want to find my brick wall in 1777?? COOPER.......damn!! I have him, but assume he came out from England around the late 1790's. He has an unusual first name (Wilkin) and have found ONE in Norfolk, IIRC.

Very good, Sis...that is not only the right website, put together by a friend of mine named Patricia Jackson, but that is also MY Wilkin Cooper who was executor for HUIE (also a relative) and even better.....I transcribed that inventory, slaves and all!! LOL.
For a long time, I couldn't mention it because it was mostly a Pay Site. But Patsy decided to retire and gave the website to London College University with the stipulation it would be free. They initially wanted it for the slave records, I understand.
The proper link is this.... http://www.jamaicanfamilysearch.com/index.htm. No longer do you need the word Members in there. It is totally free. And was a labour of love for many of us...we transcribed a lot of documents and kept the obits section up to date with those who died in other places.
Anyway, you may have to wrestle with the lousy search engine, but it is an amazing "maze" or collection of photos, wills, inventories (Huie was one) and the usual BMD's, both catholic (thanks to Father Gerry) and all shades of Protestants, and there are a lot of Jewish folks from Portugal and Spain. My husband's last name is Spanish, but was catholic, so until Fr. Gerry got permission to send out the information, I couldn't get it.
Enjoy if you want to search Jamaican names and history....and I guess I have written part of the preamble for the Daft Bat with this. I will poke around at other sites and see if they are being kept up, but this one of Patsy's is the Creme de la Creme!!!

Lordy, you are fast!! I was starting to write you re the subject of Jamaica and wondered if I had covered enough with the above. There are other websites, but none as good as this one. It's hard to remember what all contributed to my research, but the LDS microfilms were invaluable for many years. Coupled with Pat Jackson's site.
AND......the LDS films have INDEXES for every parish........zippity doo da!!
