James Henry Lovett - mariner born abt 1818

Some interesting facts I have just unearthed. James Henry and Catherine have a son Richard and according to Find a Grave his date of birth is unknown. I haven’t found it either. He was buried in 1912 and the obit in the newspaper states he was 56. Other information has him the son of late Harbour Master at Newcastle but it also says that he worked for J and A Brown, Newcastle. James and Alexander Brown were the brothers of my 3xgreat grandmother, Margaret Brown and were coal merchants in Newcastle. They also owned coal mines and private railways in Newcastle. Just a little side line…..

There is sequestion order in 1852 for James Lovett, master mariner, address Fort Street Sydney. With liabilities of 184 pounds. Your James was living in Sydney at that time. I still can’t find when he first arrived but he may have come as crew before 1841. All manifests I come across don’t mention where he is born but all the other crew members are from GB.

I have tried Mariners and Ships in Australian Waters, nothing showing up in the early years, but I have also found him on the Dauntless in September 1848 as master with Mrs Lovett as passenger traveling from Launceston to Melbourne. In December 1848 he is found as Master leaving for London also on the brig Dauntless. I wonder if Catherine is also a passenger traveling with him. Their first born, as far as we know is registered here in 1851. My thoughts are that maybe she has a child either born at sea or registered in England on this trip, as there are 3 years without children from 1848 until 1851.
Thanks Jane I’ll see if the Dauntless has a ships register with passengers … TBC
Hi Carole. Could you let us know the name of his child you are descended from because that might open up some hidden leads. Eg repeated first names through the generations.
Hi again Archie’s Mum ..
I descend from his first born James Lovett who went into the railways
He married Elizabeth Lawrence who was the daughter of Charles Lawrence who captained the indigenous cricket team that toured English in 1868

I have found quite a few maritime Lovett’s in my search but none from where the approx dates match

On James death certificate it says his dad was also James Lovett & also a mariner

All the documents & family bible’s say Bridport but I am yet to prove it or find any evidence

We are 6 degrees of separation - How funny !!

That helps a great deal, knowing his father was a mariner. I now wonder if some of the J Lovett’s captaining ships in the earlier days might be his Dad! Perhaps the whole family were living here. Great info about the cricket team. Some wonderful family history for you there. :) I’m lunching again today but will get back to work on this later today. I also came across James Jnr railway employee records as well.
